Sourcing evidence for ARC and NHMRC grants

This guide provides an overview of publication metrics and tools to support ARC and NHMRC grants

Introduction to sourcing evidence for grants

Publication metrics, citation metrics (bibliometrics) and altmetrics are quantitative indicators that may be used to assess the visibility, influence and reach of research outputs, researchers, institutions and regions.

These types of indicators are used in research assessment, promotion applications and competitive grant applications.

This guide introduces metrics that may be relevant to ARC and NHMRC funding applications and provides guidance on locating evidence that can help researchers demonstrate research achievement, influence, collaboration, leadership and broader impact.

Metrics are most valuable when used to support a clear narrative about research contribution and achievement. Quantitative indicators should always be interpreted within the context of discipline norms, career stage and research opportunity, and with an understanding of their limitations.

To learn more about commonly used publication metrics, citation metrics and altmetrics, visit the Publication Metrics Digital Workplace page (QUT staff and Higher Degree Researchers only).

ARC and NHMRC use evidence differently

While both the ARC and NHMRC may draw on publication metrics and other indicators, they place emphasis on different forms of evidence.

  • ARC schemes typically focus on research excellence, contribution to knowledge, research leadership and collaboration.
  • NHMRC Investigator Grants place greater emphasis on demonstrated research impact, including evidence that research has been adopted, used or has contributed to verifiable outcomes.

Metrics are most effective when used to support a narrative aligned with the assessment criteria of the scheme.

Important: When using metrics in a grant or promotion application, always refer to the relevant guidelines and criteria to ensure you are complying with their requirements.
