Smartphones running Google Android OS have led sales in the US over the second quarter according to the industry tracker NPD. Google stated that 160,000 android phones were activated each day in the second quarter! And the best selling handset running Android was the Motorola Droid.
Security firms are warning of a vulnerability in Apple’s iOS for iPhone, iPad and iPod. Symantec said that it could be exploited by remote attackers to take complete control of a vulnerable device. Experts said that the threat, at present, only exists on paper but that Apple need to issue a fix before it becomes a reality. Apple said that the company was aware of the report and was investigating. The problem lies in the way Apple’s Mobile Safari handles Adobe Acrobat PDF documents.

A bottle that uses ultraviolet light to sterilise drinking water has won the UK leg of the James Dyson Award.
The Pure bottle is the brainchild of Timothy Whitehead, a design and technology graduate from Loughborough University, who had the idea while travelling in Zambia.

The Homeland Security Department has identified cybersecurity as one of its primary missions, but after seven years it still is struggling to define the scope and goals of that mission. “We at Homeland Security want to stimulate debate abut cyberspace,” and to increase awareness of the issues, Deputy Secretary Jane Holl Lute said Wednesday in an opening address at the Black Hat Briefings security conference.
But to an audience that was interested in nuts and bolts and bits and bytes, Lute was able to speak only in generalities. “I don’t think there is any question of the administration’s intent to elevate cybersecurity” as a national issue, she said. She cited several accomplishments, including work on the Einstein II intrusion detection system, a National Cyber Incident Response Center that will be tested this fall during the Cyber Storm III exercises, and a draft National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace.
A spat between BT and rival telecoms firm Rutland has been resolved and hailed as a victory for future broadband services.
The dispute revolved around crucial data held by BT and needed by rivals to work out the cost of supplying areas with new fibre-optic networks. BT has agreed to change the way it supplies information about how addresses are linked to its network.

Scientists have managed to create magnetic fields in excess of 300 tesla by simply straining graphene. The important part of this story is that up to this time only around 85 Tesla has been created in a laboratory. At this moment in time there is no definite outcome from this discovery but physicists are jumping up and down in excitement.
Shipments of Google’s Android mobile operating system have rocketed in the last year, figures suggest. Statistics from research firm Canalys suggest that shipments have increased 886% year-on-year from the second quarter of 2009. Apple showed the second largest growth in the smartphone sector with 61% growth in the same period. Overall, the smartphone sector grew by 64% from the second quarter 2009 to the second quarter 2010, the research says.

The One Laptop Per Child organisation wants to join up with the Indian Government and help them develop their planned tablet device. The OLPC Chairman Nicholas Negroponte has actually offered them full access to all the OLPC kit and software. This is the quote from his blog post to the government:

As the OLPC project is not about profit or competing to produce the first tablet it make complete sense for them to promote and assist with education through technology.
An iPhone utility that lets iPhone 4 owners run non-Apple approved applications, has been released. Jailbreakme 2.0 works on all iPhones and iPod touches running iOS4, its developers say. However, there are reports that iPhone owners are losing FaceTime and multimedia messaging services, as well as problems for iPad users. The utility was launched a week after US regulators announced it was lawful to hack or jailbreak an iPhone. Unlike previous Jailbreak applications, which required the user to be connected to an external computer before they could install it, this latest version can be accessed and installed using the iPhone’s own web browser, Safari.
