The takeaway from the 81st United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week is clear: global cooperation is a business imperative as well as a political one. Across this week’s discussions, one message came through clearly: the private sector has a critical role to play not only in addressing today’s challenges, but in shaping more resilient, inclusive and sustainable economies. From accelerating the clean energy transition and mobilizing sustainable finance to strengthening responsible AI, human rights and resilient supply chains, business action is increasingly central to turning global priorities into market-level progress. From the Leaders Summit 2026 and Unstoppable Africa to sessions focused on oceans, water, supply chains and human rights, more than 3,000 leaders participated across over 40 events, bringing business and Government together to translate shared principles into action. This work is strengthened by the reach of the UN Global Compact’s global network, connecting more than 60 Country Networks with global priorities and local market realities. The 2026 UN Global Risk Report paints an evolving picture of global threats. Based on insights from 1,300 respondents across 155 countries, large-scale war is now seen as the world's greatest vulnerability, while concerns about AI and emerging technologies are rising rapidly. Political risks have moved to the forefront, and confidence in international institutions has weakened. Yet one message remains clear: cooperation matters. ⚠️ Only four years remain to deliver the 2030 Agenda, and only 35% of SDG targets are on track or making modest gains. So where does the European private sector stand? To find out, UN Global Compact Country Networks in Europe analysed sustainability data from 5,793 participating companies to measure their real contribution to the SDGs. The findings show tangible progress, and a clear imbalance: • The average SDG contribution score among European participants is 58.2 / 100. Results are strikingly consistent across countries, as most sit within ±2.9 points of the average. • 73.6 on SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), the strongest performance. In general, social goals receive a stronger level of contribution than the environmental ones. • 45.8 on SDG 13 (Climate Action): commitments have yet to be translated into operational measures such as emissions reduction and climate adaptation plans. • 22.1 on SDG 17 (Partnerships): the widest gap, and arguably the greatest untapped opportunity. Most companies have adopted policies and internal safeguards. The harder step is now to turn these commitments into measurable action, particularly for the SMEs that make up 56% of respondents. Based on these findings, the European Global Compact Country Networks issue four recommendations to the European private sector: 1. Strengthen progress measurement across all sustainability areas. 2. Make climate adaptation a priority in every sector. 3. Engage in more multi-stakeholder and public-private partnerships. 4. Expand sustainability training for all employees and suppliers. The four-year challenge ahead is considerable. But with shared frameworks, comparable data and collective action, European business can still change the trajectory, and the UN Global Compact will keep working alongside companies to make it happen. Yesterday, on the 15th anniversary of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), business leaders gathered for a candid roundtable on the practical challenges business leaders face, and the strategies they use to balance business pressures with respect for human rights. Less than five per cent of major companies pay a living wage to their workforce, and less than three per cent extend that to their suppliers. The challenge now is to turn commitments into meaningful action. Through collaboration, responsible business practices and stronger accountability across value chains, businesses can help advance human rights while building more resilient and sustainable economies The 15th anniversary of the UNGPs is an opportunity to reaffirm that respecting human rights is not only a responsibility, but an essential part of building businesses fit for the future.
