Canadian Folk & The Full Moon

“Don’t wait for me to come alive, I’ll look for you in the dead of night,” lyrics from Kacy Lee Anderson’s song “Keep Quiet,” reverberated off the cavernous walls of P’tit Ours on October 25, 2026.

Aya Nakamura plays the Bell Centre

Image

Aya Nakamura (born Aya Coco Danioko) is a French and Malian singer-songwriter who was born in Bamako, Mali. Her family moved to France when she was a child, and she grew up in Aulnay-sous-Bois, a Northern suburb of Paris. Her love for music stems from her family's ancestral traditions coming from Griots, West African as praise singers, poets and storytellers. Her mother was a traditional Malian singer, so it's no coincidence that Aya exhibited a deep love for singing and creating music.

Flooding, Bloodsports and Fionavair: Magic Found at La Sotterena!

Image

Why do we go out of our way to see music live? Most concerts nowadays seem to cost no less than a hundred dollars for a ticket, and the idea of “pay what you can” at local shows seems to only jeopardise the people putting them on. So why do we continue with a tradition that blossomed at a time when livestreams and HD video cameras didn’t exist?

Power House Vocals and the Joy of Girlhood: Sienna Spiro Takes Montreal

Image

At L’Olympia on October 23, 2026, the atmosphere surrounding Sienna Spiro’s first Montreal show felt like a gathering of girls who had found something of themselves in the same songs. The crowd was fittingly dressed in polka dots and carefully styled updos that mirrored Sienna’s own signature style.

Thundercat plays MTelus

Image

Thundercat has a golden Sonic the Hedgehog bass and it glitters as he plays.

It looks like something Elvis could wear. But Thundercat wasn't wearing it, he was wearing a Shadow the Hedgehog t-shirt when he and his band played Montreal's MTelus on October 21st, touring his recent album Distracted.

Lucinda Williams Never Gets Old

Image

I knew it was time to go inside when the rattle of the drums drowned out the conversation beside me and my cigarette was down to the nub. I glided through the doors, up the steps towards the crowd, hardly conscious of my feet moving beneath me. People bounced and roared. It was Lucinda Williams, and the song was "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road."

For decades, Williams has kissed country, blues, folk, and rock, never committing to one but lying next to them all. Her music keeps company with dive bars, breakups, indiscretions, wanderings, late-night drives, sensuality, and political conviction.

Armand Hammer delivers a return to form at the Fairmount

Image

As the October nights shift drearier and drearier, and the slow chill of Montreal’s annual winter apocalypse comes creeping up my spine, I am often drawn closer to my Fairmount street hovel on a night out. I am much less inclined to make my way down to L’Esco if it means I’ll actually have to use their migraine-inducing coatrack system; you’ll rarely catch me shivering outside Sala for a smoke break in sub-10 degrees; and the beautiful sprawl of outdoor venues gets shuttered and abandoned, replaced by preppy snowsuit ravers at Igloofest (not my scene). Alongside this quasi-hibernation comes my hankering for hip-hop. Once I get a jacket and a hoodie on, a craving for punchy kicks and drumless loops runs through my veins - it's inevitable.

Gotta Get Back to the Linda Lindas

Image

The Linda Lindas took over Théâtre Fairmount on Saturday night, bringing their joyful rockstar energy to Montreal for the second year in a row. I walked into Théâtre Fairmount on Saturday to the sound of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”, but left buzzing with the moxie that this young LA band brings wherever they go.
