The Program
The Amca Internship Program is a paid 10-week internship that promises three things:
- We will maximize the slope of your learning and growth.
- You will own outcomes, not tasks, and be held accountable for the value of those outcomes.
- You will work with the most hard working, intelligent, and ambitious people of your life.
We are hiring a small group of interns across mechanical and electrical engineering, business operations, production operations, growth, and software.
Read more about the problems you’d solve and our view on interns. Applications close November 1st at 11:59pm PST.
This is a full-time, in-person position for the summer, based in our El Segundo office in Los Angeles. This position requires use of information subject to ITAR regulations. All applicants must be U.S. persons defined by ITAR as a US citizen, permanent resident, or protected person under 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3).
Our View on Interns
We strongly believe the best internships are defined by the following traits, which we follow meticulously:
-
You and the company jointly maximize the slope of your learning and growth.
We will be extremely intentional with the work we give you, indexing entirely on making sure it strengthens your skill set while also pushing you to do more than you thought you were capable of. We will also spend serious amounts of time reflecting on your work and ambition, making sure you are fulfilled by what you’re doing, and excited by where you’re going.
-
You are pushed to own outcomes, not tasks, and held accountable for delivering them.
The correct index for good work is actualized outcomes, not task completion. We will give you the discretion to solve problems as you see fit, and hold your solutions accountable for actually creating value. You will be challenged and uncomfortable at times, and your perseverance will make you great.
-
Your peers, mentors, and everyone at the company are as intelligent, ambitious, and hard-working as you are.
We strongly believe that people shape culture, standards, and everyone around them. Therefore, we do not compromise our hiring standards under any circumstances. You will be around the smartest, most ambitious, and hardworking people of your life, who will push you to be the best version of yourself.
What happened to American engineering
There was a time when all of America believed that the future of the physical world could be radically different.
The engineers of the mid-1900s put a man on the moon in eight years, designed and built planes and submarines from scratch in under three, and conceived of building things we wouldn’t even be able to dream up today.
Today, the last of the engineers who imagined and built these systems are retiring. As they go, we lose not only the engineering knowledge gained from their decades of imagination and trial-and-error, but also the spirit that made that imagination possible.
Amca is working day-in and day-out to restore America’s ability to engineer anything that our critical systems depend on, and reinvigorate the cycle of creation that allows imagination to shape physical reality. By restoring the capability of our antiquated supply chains, we increase the country’s capacity to imagine and realize new systems, and make a physical world that looks very different from the present one.
Today, we are focused on where weakening engineering capacity has created the most immediate problems for American industry: the critical supply chain.
Critical assemblies, like servo valves, power supplies, and sensors, are defined by their integral role in the functioning of every aircraft, submarine, and power plant in the world. They’re also defined by decades of scarce and uncodified tribal knowledge. These inputs were often developed by small teams spread across the country, each having their own specialization and tribal knowledge, built through decades of physical trial-and-error. Yet as these companies consolidate or disappear daily, we lose the engineering knowledge that’s needed to build the critical inputs that underpin every piece of modern infrastructure.
Amca is building an engineering system that increases our capacity to engineer anything that our critical systems depend on, and everything our country can imagine.
It begins with preserving and building on the incredible wealth of knowledge that still exists across American industry. We do so by acquiring or partnering with long-standing companies that still have engineering know-how and codifying it: we interview employees, record how everything was designed, and digitize drawings that are gathering dust in storage cabinets. In addition, we grow and improve the specialized production operations of these companies to ensure we’re capable of manufacturing anything that we engineer.
We then integrate this codified knowledge into our custom suite of software tools to help accelerate the engineering process. The software enables our engineers to apply decades of real engineering knowledge to any new component they work on, ensuring all discovery and designs are strengthened by the rigour and knowledge of our predecessors.
Our engineers then improve and actualize their designs with Protoshop, a fully dedicated learning, prototyping, and testing lab at our HQ that allows us to rapidly iterate in physical space, much like the engineers from the era prior to the advent of simulation software. Prototyping and testing is done in the order of hours and days at Amca, as opposed to the weeks, months, or years it takes at other engineering organizations.
Through this, Amca becomes the place where the most ambitious engineers have the most powerful resources to solve the most important industrial challenges of our generation at an incredibly fast pace.
We are re-engineering hundreds of unique critical products with this approach, each solving an urgent problem in the industrial base: missing technical data keeping fighter jets grounded; failing parts whose OEMs don’t have the knowledge to fix; or long-lead parts causing production-halting delays. Without Amca, many of these projects would have been impossible or taken years, bogged down by the attempted rediscovery of what a retired generation did. With our approach, they are now often taking us weeks, and we expect timelines to shrink further.
Zooming out, our vision is not a new one. The people who built American industry similarly believed in engineering’s ability to reshape the physical world with unreasonable speed and maniacal ambition. But with the power of today’s technology, we can do so much more than recreate the past. We want to enable a new generation of engineers to imagine and build things with the same ambition that we once had. And we believe the future should be one in which every physical system that can be imagined can be built.
