Safety at Roblox

Roblox is fundamentally different from other gaming platforms. Our users range in age from 5 to over 25+ years old. This is why we have taken an age-based approach to safety with separate, more controlled accounts for our youngest users.

We also acknowledge the complexities of online environments, and recommend parents have ongoing conversations with their children about digital safety, supported by our parent resources.

Roblox Kids & Roblox Select accounts

Roblox Kids (5-8 year olds in most regions) and Roblox Select (9-15 year olds in most regions) accounts are designed to be appropriate for our younger users. These accounts have built-in guardrails to help keep users in age-appropriate environments.

Games that are available in these accounts must be rated appropriately and undergo a multi-step review process.  This includes creator verification, a demonstration of long-term platform commitment , and  an evaluation process, where the game is played by older users and monitored for violations.

Kids

Game Ratings

Minimal & Mild: Only games with our lowest maturity ratings are available in Roblox Kids accounts.

Chat

Chat is off: Chat is turned off in Roblox Kids accounts. Parents can use parental controls to turn on in-game chat (Experience Chat). This chat appears in a live, scrolling feed visible to all age-appropriate users and trusted friends who are playing the same game. Parents can also choose to turn on one-on-one chat (Direct Experience Chat) with a user who is age-appropriate or is a trusted friend.  Chat outside of games is disabled.

Age appropriate chat: If a parent decides to allow their child to chat while playing, users with Roblox Kids accounts (ages 5-8) are able to chat with other users who are ages 5-12. Users are also able to chat with trusted friends.

Parental controls

All: Parents can manage all settings through a linked parental control account. Learn more here.

Select

Chat

Chat is on: Chat is on between all age-appropriate users and trusted friends who are playing the same game (Experience Chat). Roblox Select users can also use the Chat tab to chat with friends or trusted friends. Users ages 9-12 can only use the Chat tab with trusted friends. Users ages 13-15 can use the Chat tab with trusted friends and friends who are in a similar age group. Parents can choose to turn Chat off for users under 13 years old.

Direct chat in games is off: One-on-one chat in games (Direct Chat) is off for Roblox Select users. Parents can choose to turn this on for their child with age-appropriate users and trusted friends.

Voice Chat and Voice Calling: Voice Chat is only available in some regions.

  • Voice Chat is not available for users ages 9-12.
  • In-game Voice Chat is off for all Roblox Select users. Parents can turn it on for users ages 13-15 using parental controls.
  • Voice calling is available for 13-15 year olds with trusted friends.

Age appropriate chat:

  • 9-12 year olds can chat with users ages 5-15. (Users ages 5-8 can only chat with 9-12 year olds if a parent has turned chat on in their Roblox Kids account).
  • 13-15 year olds can chat with users ages 9-17.

Quick Words: Roblox Select users will also have access to Quick Words in games. These are limited to pre-set words that have been approved by our safety team, like “win” or “go!” that allow everyone to participate safely.

Parental controls

All/Some: Parents have visibility into all of their child’s settings in Roblox Select accounts. They can actively manage Direct chat settings and can block games or allow their child to play games through the age of 15.

Building the future of safety

We are continually working to strengthen our safety systems, investing in new protections and techniques for removing bad actors when we find them.

Reporting and Blocking

No one should be made to feel uncomfortable on Roblox. If you or your child experience something that makes you feel unsafe or unwell, you can report and block the user or game.
