rfPIC Project
The purpose of this project was to demonstrate wireless data transmission. This is one-way communication from a transmitter (rfPIC) to a receiver (rfRXD). Check out this page to see the kit from microchip.com that includes the transmitter & receiver. Wired to the rfRXD is a PIC microprocessor (18F2550) whose job is to decode the data from rfRXD. Note that the rfRXD just takes the wireless signal and puts that signal on one of its pins. The rfRXD does not decode, store, output any data, it merely passes it on to another microprocessor which can do something useful with the data.
After the 18F2550 chip decodes the data from the rfRXD, it outputs the data to an LCD screen.
The kit from microchip.com uses a 16F chip to decode data from the rfRXD. The code to do that is written in assembly (hard to understand and not easily extended). So I wrote the receiver code in C programming language. This C code runs on the 18F2550 chip. This code has been tested and is fully functional. Approximately 60 hrs was spent on development time. For a mere $6 you can have a copy (that is 10 an hour equivalent).
Update! (April 11, 2007)
I had a few inquires as to whether or not this code would work on chips such as the 18F4520 and if the code would work with Microchiop's new C18 compiler. To make a long story short ... I installed the latest C18 compiler (version 3.10) and the latest version of MPLAB (version 7.5) and then made a few minor modifications to code and made a new circuit on my bread board using the 18F4520. I'm happy to report that everything is working fine.
