July 5, 2019 -BART employee Dave Zapata goes through his routine cleaning the 24th and Mission St. station which includes picking up discarded needles and syringes. BART has seen a dramatic drop in the number of syringes discarded at two of its biggest downtown San Francisco stations -- from a high of 4,197 in July of last year, to 585 in May of this year. Transit officials credit the rise of fentanyl, which can be smoked, rather than injected.
