Two words: Smelly. Tofu. 臭豆腐。Don’t say it’s gross. There are cheeses that smell just as bad.

Wow. NYT oped pitched to Tom Cotton the piece on attacking protesters with no quarter—which was published on the eve of a Tiananmen anniversary. That’s a massive journalistic failure screaming, “I don’t know current events.”

Social media policies of media companies are effectively a muzzle on POCs/the disadvantaged/survivors of trauma in the newsroom whose lives are being categorically diminished. Any there’s nary any of these voices writing nationally syndicated columns.

Newsroom social media policies effectively stifle the perspectives of minorities, survivors and the disadvantaged. B/c those are the voices considered opinion, instead of reasoned discourse essential to balanced and *accurate* coverage.

The Lunar New Year shouldn’t be appropriated to fill column inches with a list of references to western pop culture. What a threadbare concept. And for the record, Chris, who telecommuted, wasn’t in the newsroom when I objected to the writer and editor.

I love Chris and his illustrations (inc. these). But I hated designing this page because of the STORY, which has the barest relationship to my culture and the Lunar New Year. I objected to it then, and I continue to object to its marginalization of my culture today.

If your front page’s headline was a 100pt hammer of “impeached” or something akin to that, you didn’t move the story further than what was reported online and on broadcast. If we want to critique news design, let’s call out the fact that our practice no longer moves the narrative

Whoa, I’ve got a heavily booked January, with assignments scheduled through mid-March, for freelance. The income is lower than going back to being a design director at a newspaper full time, but I find myself more excited by the variety of work I get nowadays.

  14. No, Mark, it’s not that “complex.” Let me simplify (again): you and Facebook take money from politicians and run their ads — even if they’re not true — without fact-checking them. That’s not democracy, that’s you profiting off propaganda.

I have thoughts on this. It’s a terrible metaphor, and why gild the lily with such purple prose? That said, I received exactly this criticism—that I was too “free with my thoughts”—during my post-probation review with my mainland Chinese supervisor while working in China.
