👋 Please join us in welcoming Catherine Stihler as the next CEO of Creative Commons!

Catherine has been a champion for openness as both a legislator and practitioner for more than 20 years, and we're thrilled to have her on board!

✍️ Europeana has put together a great summary of the challenges faced by the cultural heritage sector in regards to #copyright. The biggest challenge? “The lack of copyright knowledge among cultural heritage professionals and an absence of training opportunities."

🤷‍♂️ Providing attribution for CC-licensed content on Facebook (or any other social media platform) can be confusing. Here's an example of attribution that we're trying to consistently include:

"Hubble's Slice of Sagittarius" by the European Space Agency, NASA Hubble, and NASA, licensed CC BY-NC. Find this image at go.nasa.gov/3g6Ug3v.

...

☝️ What we try to do when sharing on Facebook:

✅ Include the attribution at the end of the post
✅ Include the name of the image
✅ Tag the creators or list them
✅ Link out to the original source
✅ Identify the license
✅ Provide a description

We know sharing openly licensed images on social media can be difficult and confusing. Check out this blog post (bit.ly/39zlzAV), made in collaboration with Open GLAM, for a bit more on this subject.

Well, this is important news...👀

"Publishers commonly require authors to sign exclusive publishing agreements which restrict what authors can do with their research findings, including making articles Open Access in line with their funders’ requirements. To address this problem, cOAlition S has developed a **Rights Retention Strategy,** which will empower their funded researchers to publish in their journal of choice, including subscription journals, and provide Open Access in compliance with Plan S."

👋 A friendly reminder: All CC-licensed works require attribution. Here's a simple guide! #openaccess

FYI: CC0, our public domain dedication tool, doesn't require attribution. However, it’s best practice to identify provenance—where the work is stewarded—this includes listing the institution the image was sourced from.

📸 Billions of images are uploaded to the internet every day thanks to the increasingly #digital and #open nature of #photography. Despite the benefits, however, this trend has made professional photographers feel uneasy.

In this post, we talk with Luke Beard—founder and CEO of Exposure, a #storytelling platform for photographers and visual storytellers—about open licensing in photography, and why Exposure decided to make CC BY-ND an option for users.
