The second Python Software Foundation Community Service Award for Q3 2012 was presented to Simon Cross at PyCon South Africa. Simon was the lead organizer for the first annual PyCon ZA, and he has contributed to and lead several open source initiatives and plays a big role in the Cape Town Python User Group. Thanks for your efforts, Simon!

The Python Software Foundation recently announced two Community Service Awards for Q3 2012. The first award was given posthumously to Kenneth Gonsalves for his efforts in India, through his founding and leadership in the Indian Python Software Society. Kenneth passed away in early August, and his daughter accepted the award on his behalf at PyCon India.

PyCon 2013 registration and financial aid is now open! See http://pycon.blogspot.com/…/pycon-2013-registration-and-fin… or head straight to https://us.pycon.org/2013/registration/ to sign up! Early bird rates apply to the first 1000 tickets sold, with a total cap of 2500 attendees.

Last week the Python Software Foundation announced a new type of award, the Distinguished Service Award, and gave the first honor posthumously to John Hunter.

John was the creator of the matplotlib library, which provided tremendous value to not just the Python community, but to those in science and math as well. Unfortunately, John passed away recently after losing a brief battle with cancer.
