Jewish Teachings on Death and Dying
Class Three: Burial and Sacred Care of the Body Saturday November 14th 12:30 pm, in person and on Zoom When death arrives, Judaism responds with a set of practices designed to honor the deceased with the utmost dignity and respect. This session delves into the laws and customs of burial and explores other options the Jewish have chosen in more recent times. We will learn about the sacred ritual of tahara (ritual purification of the body), and the quiet, dedicated work of the chevra kadisha (burial society) who perform this final act of loving-kindness. We will also discuss the significance of simple caskets, grave markers and headstones, and the traditions surrounding Jewish cemeteries—exploring how each element reflects core Jewish values of equality, humility, and respect for the human body as a vessel of the divine. |
