This toe pic should toe-tally help you identify this animal!

Those scales reach all the way to this animal's nails... or are they claws? Have you ever heard someone say: "I need to trim my dog's nails"? When in reality, they mean claws! Claws and nails, while both made of keratin, differ fundamentally in shape and the bone structure that supports them. A nail is a tough, flat plate that protects the tips of your fingers and toes. Claws, however, are cone-shaped (conical) and often grow in a slightly curved or downward direction from the ends of an animal's toes. Claws can grow in different ways, giving you a hint of their purpose.

For this animal, what do you think these long claws are for?
Have you met Mango?

Mango is a hyacinth macaw, a species well known for its striking deep-blue plumage. As part of our Ambassador team, Mango joins us for wildlife connections at ZooVentures Theater! Stop by during the week to meet Mango or one of the other amazing ambassador animals at the Zoo!
We're paws-itively pumped for National Pumpkin Day! Throughout October, the animals have been receiving some ghoulishly good pumpkin enrichment items.
When trying to find his food hidden in the pumpkin, Loper the Florida panther opted for a more paws-on approach, carrying the pumpkin and tearing into it.
Sniffin' around for her next meal!

Red River Hogs, like Amy, have an excellent sense of smell that is thousands of times better than a human's. Those sensitive snouts easily lead them to food that lies just below the surface, such as roots, grubs, and bulbs.
An intense stare for an intense bird!

Shoebills have exceptional eyesight, relying on their sharp, binocular vision to help them spot and strike their prey with ease. The distinct grey to yellow hues of the Shoebills' irises only add to their striking gaze.
Nope, not a pufferfish, it’s a Longspine Porcupinefish!

Sourdough has made a name for himself since moving into the reef habitat in Florida Waters this past spring. Porcupinefish are notoriously inquisitive, benefitting from the confidence that their spiky defense system allows them. While these fish are still cautious, their personalities shine through when they are comfortable and safe in their environment.

Porcupinefish, as their name suggests, are covered in spines that lay flat against their body when they aren’t “puffed up”. Pufferfish, on the other hand, may be covered in prickly bumps, but not spines.
Up close with Ash!

Ash is a newer member of the African Penguin colony at ZooTampa, joining us from another facility. As an incredibly sociable penguin, Ash has already made a big impact with the team and with visitors. Visit Ash and the other penguins during your visit to the Zoo with an African Penguin Signature Encounter!
We're toad-ally shocked when we catch a glimpse of the Puerto Rican Crested Toads!

The Puerto Rican crested toad is semi-fossorial, meaning it sometimes digs or burrows underground to hide and rest. Among the crested toad’s ideal hiding spots are crab burrows, spider lairs, and nest cavities created by small Caribbean birds called todies. At ZooTampa, these toads squeeze into crevices and blend in with the substrate, making them a bit tricky to spot!
It's a Zach attack! Join us in celebrating World Okapi Day as we shine a light on the endangered "Ghost of the Forest."

Native only to the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, okapis are highly elusive and use their camouflage and quiet nature to disappear into the foliage.

One of the best ways to protect Okapi is to protect the forests they call home, which are often destroyed for valuable minerals used in electronics. By recycling electronics through organizations like Urban E-Recycling, we can make a significant impact by reusing minerals instead of destroying habitats.

‘Tis the Season For Giving!

Donate to the ZooTampa Giving Tree

Trustees of the Lowry Park Zoological Society, Directors of the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation, and the Employees and Volunteers of ZooTampa understand and appreciate the vital role of philanthropy to accomplish our work. That’s why we subscribe to the Donor Bill of Rights developed by the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel, Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, National Society of Fund Raising Executives:

“Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes that they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

  1. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  2. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  3. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
  4. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  5. To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
  6. To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  7. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  8. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
  9. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  10. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.”

ZooTampa at Lowry Park is committed to protecting your privacy. We value the trust of our donors, volunteers, employees, and other supporters and recognize that maintaining this trust requires us to ensure the confidentiality of personal information that you share with us.

As a non-profit organization, ZooTampa relies on your support, depends on the support of generous contributors, and achieves ambitious fundraising objectives by communicating with and understanding donors. We know that it is essential to protect the privacy of that information. ZooTampa, the Lowry Park Zoological Society, and the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation will neither sell nor trade a donor’s personal information to any other entity without the written permission of the donor.
