Introduction

Digital forensics on Apple mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads is a complex process. On iPhones, digital forensic evidence is typically stored in devices equipped with NAND flash memory. Using physical copying methods, bit-by-bit copies of this NAND can be obtained.

iOS devices can provide researchers with a wealth of useful data, including physical and logical data, iTunes/iCloud backup information, Wi-Fi/GPS location data, and Wi-Fi/GPS connection details. Therefore, it is crucial to follow specific procedures when examining iOS devices, and having multiple tools for data extraction and analysis will provide a comprehensive view of the data.

The study of iOS forensics fundamentally begins with creating a backup of the device on which digital forensics will be performed. Although many paid and free utilities are available for creating this backup, the quickest and easiest method is to use the iTunes software that comes with MacOS. iTunes allows you to create backups of iPhone or iPad devices seamlessly and quickly on both Windows and MacOS systems. It copies everything to your computer and extracts files using a special protocol, making it a safer, less intrusive alternative to physical copying.

Apple iPhones are powerful mobile devices that can store significant evidence/data to support forensic investigations. From images and videos to documents and emails, iPhones contain invaluable data that can help security forces identify suspects and build cases against them.

Digital Forensics on an iPhone can be performed in three steps: logical data acquisition, physical data acquisition, and file system data acquisition. Logical acquisition exploits vulnerabilities in the iPhone boot process to create a special RAM disc and access the operating system. Physical data acquisition uses the volatile nature of NAND memory to transfer a complete copy of the operating system to physical memory cards. On the other hand, file system acquisition involves taking a backup of the device and working from that backup.

This section briefly introduced iOS Forensics. The next section will cover the topic 'iOS File System'.
