Malaria remains a significant global health challenge, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where around 95% of malaria cases and deaths occur. In 2023, approximately 263 million people were infected with malaria worldwide, leading to over 597,000 deaths. Children under five are particularly vulnerable, accounting for about 80% of all malaria deaths in Africa. The results highlighted in this research demonstrates the importance of considering antigen diversity in antibody studies and provide critical information for the prioritisation and development of vaccine candidates. 🔗https://lnkd.in/gECt6MPV Myo N. Introducing #TheMalariaGlossary! 📖 Our new series breaks down commonly used malaria terms — from the parasites that cause the disease to the tools helping stop it. First up: Anopheles stephensi. 🦟 Native to South Asia and the Arabian Peninsula, this malaria-transmitting mosquito is spreading across parts of Africa. It thrives in cities, breeding in water storage tanks and other human-made containers, and is highly resistance to several insecticides makes it harder to control. 💡 Learn more about Anopheles stephensi and explore the full Malaria Glossary on our website: https://lnkd.in/efBK-etc

🔬 Behind every scientific breakthrough is a researcher driven by curiosity and a determination to solve complex problems. Last night, we celebrated eight exceptional women whose research embodies that spirit. The evening recognised this year's Marie Krogh Young Women in Science Prize finalists, each demonstrating the innovation, leadership and impact that define the Prize through groundbreaking research, community leadership and contributions to better health outcomes. Following the Prize's expansion to New Zealand this year, it was especially meaningful to celebrate such an exceptional group of researchers from across the Tasman. 🏅 Congratulations to Dr Rhea Longley, Laboratory Head at WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) for being named the 2026 Prize recipient. Dr Longley was recognised for her pioneering research into hidden malaria infections that continue to drive disease transmission worldwide, with her work shaping global guidance and malaria elimination efforts. Beyond her research, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership by co-founding the WEHI Parents Group and helping researchers with caring responsibilities access international training and development opportunities. We were honoured to have Her Excellency Ingrid Dahl-Madsen, Danish Ambassador to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, present the Prize, and grateful to Professor Tony Haymet PhD, Australia's Chief Scientist, for sharing reflections on the importance of creating pathways for women researchers to thrive at every stage of their careers, including those balancing caring responsibilities and navigating non-linear career journeys. A special thank you to our esteemed judging panel, Dr Ana Svensson, Professor Jemma Geoghegan, Dr Jesse Bergman and Dr Rolf Gomes, for the difficult task of selecting this year's recipient from an exceptional field of finalists. Congratulations to all eight finalists. Through your innovation, leadership and impact, you are helping shape the future of science and inspiring the next generation of women researchers to follow in your footsteps. 👏 #MarieKroghPrize
