We’ve just made our submission to the Senate Inquiry into Social Housing. Here are our key arguments, paired with some case studies from at home and around the world.

Think Forward has long been an advocate for the Intergenerational Report, while pointing out its flaws. This year's version makes some content improvements, including a new section specifically about intergenerational equity beyond the Budget bottom line. But what does it actually say? It says the Government is acting and things are improving in some areas, but ultimately, as the report states, intergenerational equity pressures continue to grow. Our main worry is whether the Government is getting the response right and doing enough to build the future, rather than taking what's on the way. We don't think they are.

Time to make our case!

With quiet confidence that we are on the right side of the debate, I wrote this piece for the Age/SMH. Those arguing that the Budget is an attack on younger generations don’t understand what we actually aspire to. Opponents of the reforms are using financial anxiety to tell the classic ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ tale for a new generation. But the difference is that it’s property investing, an inheritance, or betting on the latest cryptocurrency that does the pulling up, not hard work. But the next generation of great Australian workers, carers, thinkers and businesses comes from investing in Australia’s people, not tax breaks for wealth holders. So not only do we need reform, we need a whole new vision of what our economic futures look like. To me, that looks like everyone – irrespective of their ability to invest, postcode, or family wealth – having the freedom to learn, experiment, start a business, find a meaningful job, and feel that their contributions are rewarded.
