World Audiovisual Heritage Day 🎞️ Today, on Oktober the 27th we celebrate our big day! A day to remind everyone that CINEMATEK is so much more that a cinema in the centre of Brussels. Today is also the day to remind everyone of the importance of the conservation and restoration of this heritage. We have multiple locations in Belgium, filled with one of europe's biggest archives of audiovisual heritage. We preserve not only films, in both digital and analogue formats, but also everything connected to them: projectors, pre-cinema objects, documents, scripts, correspondence, books, magazines, and much more. Why does all this matter? Preserving our audiovisual heritage is essential today and even more important for future generations. Conserving this legacy ensures that our film history remains accessible, not only for enjoyment, but also for scientific research, education and an important understanding of our past. Films are more than moving images, they are valuable sources and markers of time. So support and celebrate us today! 🎉

Risk is the theme of this years Film Restored festival. For film archives, AI is probably the risk we discuss the most and don't necessarily know where to start. On 21 October, together with Michal Bregant and Národní filmový archiv, we will host a hands-on workshop at Deutsche Kinemathek : Collaborative Approaches to AI – Exploring the Scope for Archival Agency. The idea is simple we want to start building together the elements of an AI policy for our institutions. → Which uses do we accept, and under what conditions? (cataloguing, subtitling, restoration) → Where is human validation non-negotiable? → How do we document and disclose AI interventions to audiences and rights holders? 📍 Deutsche Kinemathek – Hall, Berlin 🗓 Wednesday 21 October, 15:30 🗣 In English · Free · Limited places ✉️ Register by 9 October: registration_fr@deutsche-kinemathek.de More info 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHHNGMSw
CINEMATEK is honoured to have been part of this wonderful restoration of Murnau's iconic classic "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans", with a spectacular world premiere at Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna!
7,000(!) people. One historic piazza. A live orchestra under the stars. That’s how the definitive restoration of F.W. Murnau’s SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS made its world premiere on June 20 at Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna, and honestly, we’re still floating, so forgive us for one final indulgent post. Variety was on the ground for it, and SFFP president Robert Byrne talked about just how hard-won this restoration was: “The biggest challenge with restoring ‘Sunrise’ is there is no original material; you are working with later generation materials the whole way.” And yet the team pushed further than any previous restoration ever had, working to “go as far as we can to ethically perfectly restore the film.” READ MORE: https://lnkd.in/eYw2-YK9 (And check out their video!) Italian press got swept up in it too. Blasting News called SUNRISE “the most beautiful film in the world” in its coverage of the night. READ MORE: https://lnkd.in/e9bKJwrt Almost a hundred years after Murnau’s masterpiece first stunned audiences, it filled a historic Italian piazza and stunned a whole new generation. Grazie, Bologna. Grazie, Murnau. See you at the next restoration. More photos from the magic of that night, courtesy of Valerio Greco.

Tomorrow in Bologna, CINEMATEK is part of the ACE Workshop 2026: "AI in Everyday Archival Practice". In the morning our colleague Nick Verlinden will talk about using AI in film restoration and in the afternoon our colleague Sophie Tsotridis will give an overview of how AI is used in collection management. The workshop brings film archives, public television and research institutions around one practical question: what does AI really change in everyday archival work? We're glad to help shape that conversation. You can find our more information about the program below. 👇
This week CINEMATEK is organising the afternoon of the ACE Workshop 2026 in Bologna: "AI in Everyday Archival Practice". Our session starts from one question: what does AI actually change in collection management, once you set the hype aside? We've brought together film archives, public television and research institutions to compare what's really working and how we collaborate best. I'll introduce the afternoon with CINEMATEK's own use case: where AI genuinely helps, where the ethical stakes mean we should slow down, and how we build the best solutions by collaborating with researchers and local institutions. Open to all. If you work in or around archives, come and join the discussion. Full programme: https://lnkd.in/eJsHAF2R

In the beginning of June we launched our SteunTicketdeSoutien. In recent years, the costs associated with energy, maintenance of our building and projection infrastructure, film restoration and archive collection management have risen significantly. By adjusting our prices slightly and offering a special support ticket, we are hoping to continue maintaining our theatres, restoring and digitising fragile films, and supporting the daily work of our archivists. The ticket will be focusing on funding specific projects at CINEMATEK. This year, the proceeds will fund a poster restoration project from our Documentation Centre.

Last week, our new restoration of Seagulls Die in the Harbour (Meeuwen sterven in de haven) premiered at Cannes Classics 2026. In 1956, the film became the first Belgian feature ever selected for the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Seventy years later, this Flemish cult film returned to the Croisette in a new 4K restoration by CINEMATEK. Introduced by Wouter Hessels (RITCS/INSAS) and Tomas Leyers (conservator at CINEMATEK), the film was warmly received by the Cannes audience. A huge thank you to the teams at CINEMATEK and DIGILAB, and to all partners, supporters, and sponsors who helped make this restoration possible. This selection at Festival de Cannes is a beautiful reminder that our shared film heritage is still alive and continues to be loved by audiences today.
