Two new Liberation Route Europe trails now connect the beginning and end of WWII in the Netherlands! On 22 October, a new 3 km walking route and an 18 km cycling route were officially launched at the Grebbeberg Military Cemetery of Honour, inviting visitors to explore the wartime history of Rhenen and Wageningen. From the Battle of the Grebbeberg in May 1940 to the German surrender negotiations at Hotel De Wereld five years later, the routes tell the stories of soldiers and civilians who experienced these defining moments in Dutch history. The launch is the result of a collaboration between Oorlogsgravenstichting, Stichting De Greb, and the LRE Foundation, bringing together local historical knowledge, heritage preservation, and route development to make these stories accessible to visitors. Caroline Folmer, deputy mayor of Rhenen, and Floor Vermeulen, mayor of Wageningen, joined the launch, highlighting the connection between the two municipalities and their shared history. Along both routes, our Vectors of Memory guide visitors to historical sites and personal stories, connecting the places we pass today with the events that unfolded there over 80 years ago. 🔗 Discover the two routes, the people behind their development, and more about the launch in our latest article on the LRE website: https://lnkd.in/d7_pcuAP Gemeente Wageningen gemeente Rhenen Gert-Jan Jacobs Aude Maillard #LREFoundation #LiberationRouteEurope #WWIIHistory #TheNetherlands #CulturalHeritage
