What does it take to move from receiving people who arrive in Europe to ensuring that they can fully belong to the societies they become part of? That was one of the central questions at our study visit in Asturias, Spain, from 30 September to 2 October. SOLIDAR members exchanged on migration and inclusion policies, from the local to the regional perspective, and compared the current situation in different Member States. Our Secretary General Mikael Leyi reminded participants that humanity has always migrated and will always do. The challenge is to move beyond the reception of migrants and create the conditions for people to feel that they belong, so they can participate fully in the societies where they live. The visit looked closely at the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration, which started on 12 June. The comparison between Member States shows that preparations for border and asylum procedures outpace investment in housing, education, employment and essential services. In Spain, the €500 million allocated for the first year of the Integration and Citizenship Plan shows that challenges persist: uneven local access, unclear funding and limited civil society influence. We also looked at digital competences as a key to long term inclusion. More than half of EU employees report algorithmic management practices, so training must include knowledge to recognise workplace monitoring and understand automated decisions. This needs cooperation between educators, public authorities, civil society and trade unions. One message came through clearly: inclusion must be the ultimate goal, yet current policies remain primarily focused on reception and border control. Today, SOLIDAR joined the demonstration in Brussels organised by the trade unions FGTB and ACV, Algemeen Christelijk Vakverbond against the ARIZONA government’s plan to ask workers once again to foot the bill. We stand with the trade unions in demanding that the government consider alternative routes to balance their budget such as asking those with the broadest shoulders to pay up. Workers cannot be asked, once again, to patch up budget gaps. Other options are possible. You just need the political courage to put them on the table. Let’s keep showing up. L’union fait la force!

50 companies and NGOs are sending a clear message to EU member states: start using ETS2 revenues now to support vulnerable households. Delaying ETS2 starves governments of the exact funds needed to shield citizens from future energy crises. A coalition of industry leaders and consumer advocacy groups - including ABB, Danfoss, Iberdrola, Ørsted, and BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation - has signed an open letter urging member states to finalise the transposition of ETS2. By leveraging frontloaded revenues immediately, governments can ensure lower-income households aren't left behind in the green transition. How could these early ETS2 revenues make an immediate impact? 🚘 Social EV leasing schemes to make zero-emission mobility accessible 🏡 Heat pump installations for vulnerable consumers 🚍 Expanded public transport infrastructure 💶 Targeted protection for poorer drivers facing high fuel prices Sweden has already taken the lead as the first member state to mobilise ETS2 revenues, using the funds to support citizens switching to electric vehicles amidst high diesel prices.
