Throughout the current campaign, there might have been no more entertaining side to watch in the USL ecosystem than the Charlotte Independence.
Now, with a game to go in their regular season, they’ve got the silverware and the records to prove it.
Entering Saturday night’s road clash with Portland Hearts of Pine at Fitzpatrick Stadium (5 p.m. ET | ESPN+), the Jacks have not only claimed the USL League One Players’ Shield for the first time but have rewritten the league’s single-season record book in the process, becoming the first club to record 20 regular season victories and demolishing the single-season scoring record in the process.
RUNNING IT UP: The Independence’s free-flowing attacking style has been rewarded with some of the sharpest finishing the league has ever seen. Its 73 regular season goals in 31 games are already 12 ahead of the previous record of 61 recorded by Union Omaha in the 2023 season and have seen the side average a league-record 2.35 goals per game. What’s more, there’s never been a side that’s created this volume of chances historically; the Jacks have also averaged 2.00 Expected Goals per game.
INDIVIDUAL BRILLIANCE: Those team numbers have seen playmaker Jon Bakero demolish League One’s single-season assists record with 17 helpers – six clear of the previous record – and Golden Boot leader Souaibou Marou tied for second all-time individually with 18 goals so far in the campaign. It’s been far from a two-player show, however, with five Jacks having recorded at least 10 goal contributions as Luis Álvarez (9G, 4A), Joey Skinner (6G, 6A), and Christopher Jaime (3G, 7A) have all played their parts. On top of that, Charlotte has seen 14 players record multiple goals in the regular season, and nine players record multiple assists overall.
HOME COOKING: The Jacks have been even more dominant on their home turf, setting League One single-season records with 14 wins out of 16 outings and 45 regular season goals at its two homes of American Legion Memorial Stadium and the Sportsplex at Matthews. As the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2026 USL League One Playoffs, that offers the potential for the Independence to complete the double this postseason, capping their historic campaign in style.
Alongside all of this has been the ascent of Head Coach Mike Jeffries in the league’s all-time wins ranks. Last Saturday’s 3-0 victory at Greenville Triumph SC – which featured a second hat trick of his career for Marou – was Jeffries’ 65th on the sidelines in League One, now the most of any manager in the league’s history.
However the postseason turns out, and whatever may be ahead as the club moves into the offseason, the accomplishments the Independence have achieved already this season have left an indelible mark this year.
