Bringing legal expertise and frontier AI together starts with trust. For Thomson Reuters’ Camillo Speroni, that means output lawyers can verify, cite and put their name on. Watch him discuss Thomson Reuters’ work with OpenAI to bring HighQ and Thomson Reuters CoCounsel Legal into ChatGPT Enterprise, connecting the tools lawyers rely on in one place.

Most tax and compliance technology sit outside the systems where transactions actually happen. That's the gap Thomson Reuters and Oracle have been working to close. Today, Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE indirect tax determination, e-invoicing, and compliance reporting solutions are listed on Oracle Cloud Marketplace and have earned Oracle Validated status for Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications. For customers, that means a single place to find, evaluate, and activate ONESOURCE capabilities designed to work with Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP. Together, the solutions support key parts of the indirect tax lifecycle, from tax determination and e-invoicing to compliance reporting and filing for global requirements. The Marketplace listing builds on the solutions Thomson Reuters and Oracle introduced within Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP in June, making ONESOURCE capabilities easier to find, evaluate, and activate. Joel Hron, CTO of Thomson Reuters, says renting a frontier model is like renting a house: you get a roof over your head, but you build no equity. So his team built their own legal model and Joel joined the Chain of Thought Podcast to explain their approach. Joel leads product engineering across Westlaw, Practical Law, and CoCounsel. He walked me through how Thomson Reuters trained Thomson 1, what it cost, and why it still uses both frontier and open-source models for the rest. - YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gVGcxnEk - Spotify: https://lnkd.in/g_qZ9eDc - Apple: https://lnkd.in/ganJXr7g - Chapters + transcript: https://lnkd.in/g4e_ACxj Brought to you by: - Svix – reliable webhooks for startups and the Fortune 500. Qualified startups get $12,000 in credits, YC companies $50,000: https://link.svix.com/cot - Walrus Foundation – Walrus Memory gives AI agents portable, verifiable memory that carries context across apps, sessions, and other agents: https://walrus.xyz/cot 3 throughlines: 1. Expert judgment is data you can keep, if you own the weights Every time a Thomson Reuters attorney picks answer B over answer A, that's expert judgment a model could learn from. "If you rent a house, you're paying a landlord and you've got a roof over your head... but you build no long-term equity." Owning the model gives Thomson Reuters a way to train on those calls and compound that expertise over time. 2. The first big jump came from the harness, not the model Rebuilding CoCounsel around agent-native tools took its roughly 3,000-query legal benchmark from about 25% answered in one shot to "north of 70%" once the agent had the tools it needed and basic instructions for using them. Thomson 1 takes the next step: "I'm going to actually train the model to use these tools more directly." It launches first in high-volume document review, where it beat prior models by about five points on tabular-analysis accuracy. 3. The hardest hallucinations to catch aren't fake case names Fabricated cases are bad, but they happen "more infrequently than you would expect or than you hear about in the news." The hard ones are misinterpretations: reading a case more broadly than it holds, or treating a judge's opinion as fact. That takes expert judgment to teach, which is where Thomson Reuters' attorneys come in. + Joel's advice to CTOs eyeing open models: ask "what is the thing that I know better than anybody else in this world?" and train for that. The final training run cost just about $450,000; the program behind it, about $40 million. #ChainOfThought #AIPodcast #AIAgents #LegalTech

Legal work happens across many environments. The professional standard should travel with it. Starting October 15, HighQ is available as an MCP plugin within Microsoft 365 Copilot, as a launch partner for Microsoft Copilot for Legal. That means matter context, documents, and team information from HighQ are now accessible directly in Copilot Chat and Cowork, Copilot in Teams, and Word, without switching platforms or rebuilding context. The best integrations do not add a new tool. They make the ones legal professionals already rely on work better together. This is part of how Thomson Reuters is building across the legal AI ecosystem, ensuring that trusted, fiduciary-grade capabilities are present wherever professional work happens.
