On the occasion of #WorldMentalHealthDay, the World Health Organization has released its guide to #deinstitutionalization of psychiatric hospitals. The guide explains how countries can move away from large psychiatric institutions towards mental health care and services that allow people to live independently, with dignity, and as part of their communities. It provides practical advice for making the transition to #CareNotCustody, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration and the need for individuals with mental health conditions to have a voice in decisions that affect their lives. This endeavor can only be achieved with communities and people with lived experience leading the way. https://lnkd.in/egfUzeuD #LivedExperience #CommunityCare

We are pleased to partner with minds ge, a Swiss organisation rooted in the Geneva community that helps people to care for their mental health every day. Minds works to break the silence around mental health problems and challenge the stigma that too often comes with them. With our support, they will develop a campaign shaped by those who have experienced such issues. At the same time, they will strengthen the skills of professionals in healthcare, education, and social services, so that people who seek support are met with real understanding. We are also contributing to Minds as an organisation so that it can deepen its impact and sustain this work over time. In Uganda, someone who attempts suicide can still face legal charges instead of receiving care. With the support of our partner, United for Global Mental Health, Omona Mercy Gracy is working to change this by opening a dialogue with lawmakers and building support for the decriminalization of attempted suicide, because no one should be afraid to ask for help. Earlier this year, we began a multi-year partnership with United for Global Mental Health (UGMH). As part of our focus on strengthening the mental health ecosystem, we are supporting UGMH and its work to address barriers that affect the rights, care, and recovery of people living with mental health conditions. Together, we work towards deinstitutionalisation and the decriminalisation of suicide, while strengthening the leadership of people with lived experience in shaping the laws and policies that affect their lives. This partnership reflects our belief that lasting change requires stronger voices, effective collaboration, and mental health systems grounded in dignity, autonomy, inclusion, and human rights. We look forward to learning from this work and from those leading change in their communities. Today we are at the #wha79 with our advisor Claudia Marinetti for the launch of our new partner United for Global Mental Health 's #CareNotCustody campaign. We are proud to support this initiative. The transition from institutional to community care is a key step to make mental health services human rights compliant and recovery oriented. For this, there is a need for real change in the mental health ecosystem, a change only possible involving people with lived experience. As Tiwa Ayeni said, rights based reform cannot happen effectively without the people impacted by the system.
What does Care Not Custody mean to you? 8.4 million people are admitted to mental health hospitals every year. Yet, 73% of countries have yet to align their mental health laws with international human rights standards. Today at #WHA79, in partnership with the Global Mental Health Action Network, we are officially launching Care Not Custody - a global campaign to dismantle outdated institutional systems and replace them with rights-based, community-led support. Mental health care must be rooted in dignity, autonomy, and community inclusion - not coercion and restraint. 🎥 Watch the campaign trailer below. 📣 Take Action: Join the movement and help us ensure that "Care Not Custody" becomes the global standard for mental health care. 👉 Visit the campaign page: https://lnkd.in/eU3-BWpi #CareNotCustody #MentalHealth #HumanRights #Deinstitutionalisation

Stigma and discrimination remain major barriers to mental health care, inclusion, and, ultimately, recovery. While stigma shapes attitudes, discrimination turns them into real-world consequences, limiting access to education, employment and essential services, and undermining fundamental rights. This year’s #WorldHealthDay highlights the power of scientific collaboration in protecting people’s health. Evidence shows that stigma and discrimination can be reduced. (https://lnkd.in/eXaAQzez). What works is also what we commit to at Fondation d’Harcourt: 🟢Contact-based approaches that centre lived experience 🟢 Rights-based, community-led initiatives promoting inclusion 🟢 Cross-sector collaboration 🟢 Long-term commitment to lasting change We want mental health to be understood, respected and upheld for everyone, together with our partners. #MentalHealth #EndStigma #EndDiscrimination

We would like to congratulate aves Mental Health (Global Mental Health Peer Network) warmly on this milestone! Thank you for strengthening our work and enriching our thinking, we're glad to walk alongside you.
Today, the 9th of February, marks the founding of aves Mental Health, previously known as the Global Mental Health Peer Network. What began with a simple but powerful belief that lived experience belongs at the centre has grown into a global community shaped by connection, care, and lived experience leadership. To mark this milestone, we’re sharing reflections from our staff, alumni advocates, and Board members, highlighting our shared journey, growth, and the power of lived experience. This is our journey, and it’s still unfolding. #avesMentalHealth #LivedExperience #PeerLed #ExpertsByExperience #OurJourney #PeerSupport

2025 has been a year of change at Fondation d’Harcourt, grounded in the same values that have always guided our work. 📜We launched our new strategy to support communities and their ecosystems, shifting towards new forms of collaboration. We seek organisations and initiatives with whom to partner in a flexible and responsive way, with the aim of achieving transformative and sustainable change in #mentalhealth care. 🤝 We strengthened our participatory approach with the help of our new Advisory Committee, including people with lived experience who have joined us in our efforts to improve our transparency and accountability. Together with aves Mental Health (Global Mental Health Peer Network), Julian Eaton, Claudia Marinetti, Nasri Omar and Erica Breuer, we are working to enable a mental health ecosystem that is community-rooted, accessible, compassionate and grounded in the realities of those we serve. 🌱 We engaged with like-minded changemakers at key forums like the 7th Global Mental Health Summit #GMHWS2025, which was co-led by people with lived experience. We have also worked with other funders on initiatives such as the recently launched collaborative “Funders for Community Mental Health” (https://lnkd.in/e-frnbKT). As we come to the end of the year, we are grateful to the partners who have accompanied us so far and look forward to starting new collaborations in 2026. Together, we can continue to reshape mental health systems and bring better support to all! Wishing you all a pleasant and restful end of the year 🎄✨ -------------------- Find out more about our work on our new website: https://lnkd.in/dyc4AzRY
