{"id":55191,"date":"2021-03-31T14:24:51","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T18:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/?p=55191"},"modified":"2021-04-01T10:04:04","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T14:04:04","slug":"deepdotweb-tal-prihar-dark-web-darknet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/deepdotweb-tal-prihar-dark-web-darknet\/","title":{"rendered":"DeepDotWeb boss pleads guilty to laundering millions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The administrator of a website that served as a gateway to dark web marketplaces for purchasing heroin, firearms and hacking tools pleaded guilty to money laundering charges on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Justice Department said that Tal <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/deep-dot-web-drugs-doj-arrests\/\">Prihar administered DeepDotWeb<\/a>, where he received $8.4 million in kickbacks from <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/tag\/dark-web\/\">dark web<\/a> marketplaces for providing prospective customers with direct links to those sites, which sold illegal goods but weren&#8217;t easily found via search engines. When law enforcement indicted Prihar and an alleged co-conspirator in 2019, authorities hailed it as &#8220;the single most significant law enforcement disruption of the Darknet to date.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French law enforcement captured Prihar, an Israeli native who had lived in Brazil. Israeli law enforcement arrested the alleged co-owner of the site, Michael Phan, who handled day-to-day operations. U.S. authorities previously seized DeepDotWeb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor six years, DeepDotWeb was a gateway to facilitate the illegal purchase of items to include dangerous drugs, weapons, and malicious software,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/deepdotweb-administrator-pleads-guilty-money-laundering-conspiracy\">said acting Special Agent in Charge Carlton Peeples<\/a> of the FBI\u2019s Pittsburgh field office. \u201cPrihar profited as a byproduct from other people\u2019s dangerous transactions and today\u2019s guilty plea sends a message to other cyber actors across the globe who think the dark web is a safe haven.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/tag\/department-of-justice-doj\/\">DOJ<\/a> said that Prihar and Phan received their payments via virtual currency, then concealed the source by transferring payments from a bitcoin wallet to shell company bitcoin and bank accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prihar faces up to 20 years in prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/disruptor-dark-web-crackdown-opioids\/\">In recent years authorities have had some success<\/a> in shuttering dark web commerce, ranging from the September 2020 arrest of 179 alleged drug traffickers to other arrests carried out in connection with <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/wall-street-market-shut-down-dark-web\/\">the 2019 shutdown of Wall Street Market<\/a> and Valhalla Marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clarification,<\/strong> <em>4\/1\/21: The description of DeepDotWeb was made more precise.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DOJ had hailed the indictment of the man and a co-conspirator as &#8220;the single most significant law enforcement disruption of the Darknet to date.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":249,"featured_media":55194,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"disable_grayscale_images":true,"grayscale_contrast":0,"sponsored_content":false,"display_author_bio":true,"story_type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[2,3,5975],"tags":[40,143,443,821,1916,3055,4607,5350,5768],"people":[],"special-report":[],"authors":[5584],"class_list":["post-55191","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-financial","category-government","category-policy","tag-fbi","tag-dark-web","tag-cybercrime","tag-dark-web-markets","tag-valhalla-market","tag-us-courts","tag-department-of-justice-doj","tag-wall-street-market-dark-web","tag-deepdotweb","author-tim-starkscyberscoop-com"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.7 (Yoast SEO v28.7) -
