"Last year I lost 50 hectares of maize to cutworm. Then I discovered that in America they have maize resistant to cutworm." A farmer in Italy’s Po Valley told us this. His words capture the resilience gap facing UK and European agriculture: the pressures are rising faster than innovation is reaching the field. That’s why Bayer commissioned a new study, combining economic analysis by Oxford Economics, polling of more than 8,000 consumers, and interviews with around 90 farmers across eight European markets. The findings point to a clear challenge: farmers need access to useful innovation on timelines that let them compete - without lowering safety standards. The innovation exists. How can agriculture feed the planet while helping address climate change?
