Image Image Image Image

Pictogram (象形): a bird with a prominent crest and tail feathers. The phonetic component 凡 (*bam) (sometimes written as 戌) was often added.

Bronze inscriptions record the presentation of live feng (中乎歸生鳳于王), indicating it originally referred to a real bird, likely the peacock (compare 皇, which depicts a peacock feather).

In the oracle bone script, it was borrowed for 風 (OC *pəm). The character 風 is actually a later corrupted abbreviation of 鳳, with its 虫 component evolving from the peacock's tail feathers.

Etymology

[edit]

This has been related to 風 (OC *plum, “wind”) (Schuessler, 2007) and also by Wang (1982) to 鵬 (OC *bɯːŋ, “fabulous great bird”).
