{"id":97171,"date":"2026-06-30T06:00:54","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T13:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/github.blog\/changelog\/2026-06-30-upcoming-access-restrictions-to-public-api-endpoints-and-ui-views"},"modified":"2026-07-01T04:40:50","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T11:40:50","slug":"upcoming-access-restrictions-to-public-api-endpoints-and-ui-views","status":"publish","type":[3523],"link":"https:\/\/github.blog\/changelog\/2026-06-30-upcoming-access-restrictions-to-public-api-endpoints-and-ui-views","title":{"rendered":"Upcoming access restrictions to public API endpoints and UI views"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>As part of our ongoing commitment to protect our users and ensure responsible use of our platform, the Notifications team will soon introduce access restrictions to several public API endpoints and related UI views.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"whats-changing\" id=\"whats-changing\" ><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#whats-changing\">What&rsquo;s changing<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Access to the following public API endpoints will be limited to admins and collaborators:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.github.com\/rest\/activity\/starring?apiVersion=2026-03-10&amp;versionId=free-pro-team%40latest&amp;category=actions&amp;subcategory=permissions#list-stargazers\">List stargazers endpoint<\/a>: <code>\/repos\/{owner}\/{repo}\/stargazers<\/code><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.github.com\/rest\/activity\/watching?apiVersion=2026-03-10#list-watchers\">List watchers endpoint<\/a>: <code>\/repos\/{owner}\/{repo}\/subscribers<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We will deprecate the endpoint and remove access to the underlying information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.github.com\/rest\/activity\/watching?apiVersion=2026-03-10#list-repositories-watched-by-a-user\">List repositories watched by a user endpoint<\/a>: <code>\/users\/{username}\/subscriptions<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the deprecation period, the endpoint will remain accessible but will return empty responses.
