About us

Sport Ireland was established on the 1st October 2015 and brings together the Irish Sports Council (ISC), the Sport Ireland Institute, National Sports Campus and Coaching Ireland to drive the future of Irish sport. Background The Institute of Sport (now the Sport Ireland Institute) was set up by the government in 2006 and based at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus in Abbotstown. Our remit is to deliver world class support services to high performance athletes mandated by the Irish Sports Council. In 2009 the Institute successfully transitioned and took over responsibility for the science and medicine player athlete services from Coaching Ireland (formerly the NCTC). In December 2009, we moved into the Institute HQ building and in late 2010 with a grant from the Department of Arts Sport and Tourism began commissioning the clinics and labs out of which we deliver services. The science, medicine and lifestyle support services from our HQ became operational in April 2011. Our focus We focus on three key components to positively impact the performance of Irish athletes. These are: Systems, Services and People Informed by the analysis of the wider sport system the Institute is working with the sports to deliver: System Development: high performance planning, review and debrief, development of process and protocols. Service Development: integrated and focused support services across science, medicine and lifestyle management. People Development: high performance coach development, accreditation of service providers, professional development for coaches, performance directors and service providers. - See more at: http://www.instituteofsport.ie

  • 💡 HPX Nutrition 2026 | The Information Paradox: Distinguishing Nutrition Science from Digital Noise The afternoon session at HPX Nutrition 2026 explored emerging technology, AI, the gut microbiome and, ultimately, the real-world experience of athletes and coaches. 📈 Dr. Nicola Guess opened with “GM Readings in Athletes: What Can We Expect to See, and What Does It Mean?”, exploring glucose monitoring in athletes and the importance of understanding what this technology can and cannot tell us. 🤖 Dr. Claire Timon followed with “Nutrition in the Age of AI”, exploring the opportunities and challenges AI presents for nutrition practice and reinforcing the importance of critical thinking and professional expertise when navigating an increasingly complex information landscape. 🦠 Prof. Orla O'Sullivan presented “No Guts, No Glory: A Role for the Gut Microbiome in Athletic Performance”, exploring the developing evidence around the gut microbiome and its potential role in athlete health and performance. 🏏🚣♀️ The Athlete & Coach Panel brought the day back to the real-world experience of performance nutrition. Harry Tector (Cricket Ireland), Mags Cremen OLY (Rowing Ireland) and Michael McGeehin (Director of Sport Ireland Coaching) shared their perspectives on nutrition, training and performance. A key message was the importance of the relationship between athletes and their nutritionists; building trust, communicating openly and working together to support individual needs. The panel also highlighted the importance of listening to qualified professionals rather than being influenced by the latest trends and noise online. 🏆 The day concluded with Closing Remarks and Prizes, kindly sponsored by Currys Ireland. Across the afternoon, one message came through clearly: more information doesn't always mean better information. Our role is to critically evaluate the evidence, understand its limitations and apply it appropriately. A fitting way to celebrate 10 years of HPX Nutrition. A huge thank you to everyone who attended yesterday, and to all of our speakers, contributors, partners and sponsors who helped make HPX Nutrition 2026 such a memorable day. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next year! 🙌 Hosted by Sport Ireland Institute, in collaboration with the National Dairy Council 🥛 #HPXNutrition #HPX26 #SportIrelandInstitute #NationalDairyCouncil #SENG #SportsNutrition

  • 💡 HPX Nutrition 2026 | The Information Paradox: Distinguishing Nutrition Science from Digital Noise The midday session at HPX Nutrition 2026 brought together expert insights into carbohydrate fuelling, performance physiology and the practical application of scientific evidence to support athlete performance. 🥗 Prof. Gareth Wallis presented “Fueling Endurance Sport: The Carbohydrate Conundrum”, exploring the evolving evidence around carbohydrate intake and its role in endurance performance. A key takeaway was the importance of individualising carbohydrate strategies to meet the demands of each athlete, gradually building intake to optimise performance while maintaining gastrointestinal tolerance. The discussion also highlighted opportunities for practitioners to translate emerging research into practical fuelling strategies for athletes. 📊 Dr. Conor Raleigh and Lorenz Kissling, physiologists at the Sport Ireland Institute, followed with “Performance Physiology: Linking Physiological Data with Performance Nutrition.” Their session highlighted the value of integrating physiological data with performance nutrition to better understand athlete needs and inform training and fuelling strategies. They demonstrated how collaboration between physiologists, nutritionists and coaches can help identify practical opportunities to improve nutrition provision and support training periodisation. 🏟️ The session concluded with a tour of the Sport Ireland Institute, giving attendees an opportunity to learn more about the high-performance environment and the facilities supporting Ireland's athletes. Across the sessions, one message stood out: meeting athletes' energy requirements, with a particular focus on carbohydrate fuelling, remains fundamental to performance. More data, lower body weight or increasingly sophisticated technology do not automatically translate into better outcomes. Effective practice requires critical thinking, individualised strategies and collaboration across the performance team. As we celebrate 10 years of HPX Nutrition, these discussions reinforced the importance of translating evolving research into practical, evidence-informed support for athletes. • 💡 HPX Nutrition 2026 | The Information Paradox: Distinguishing Nutrition Science from Digital Noise Yesterday, we celebrated 10 years of HPX Nutrition at the Sport Ireland Campus Conference Centre, bringing together students and professionals from across sport, exercise and nutrition to explore the challenge of distinguishing credible nutrition science from the growing noise of information online. 🥣 The morning began with a Student Breakfast, providing students with an opportunity to connect and network with peers and professionals across the field. 🎓 Following breakfast, Carrie O’Keefe (Anti-Doping) and Aoife Burns (National Dairy Council) hosted presentations for the students, offering an opportunity to learn, engage and explore key topics relevant to sport and nutrition. 🎤 Emma Walls, CEO of the National Dairy Council, then delivered the opening address, setting the scene for a day focused on evidence-informed practice in an increasingly complex information landscape. 🧠 Prof. Sharon Madigan opened the morning session with Navigating Misinformation in Sports Nutrition Practice, exploring the challenges of misinformation and the importance of critically evaluating the information that shapes athletes’ and practitioners’ decisions. 📚 Prof. Kate Pumpa followed with Evidence Applied: Know it. Use it. Add to it., highlighting the importance of translating research into practice and continuing to build on the evidence that informs sport and exercise nutrition. ☕ A mid-morning break gave delegates the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and continue the conversations sparked by the presentations. As HPX Nutrition marks its 10th year, the morning reinforced the importance of critical thinking, collaboration and evidence-informed practice in helping athletes and practitioners navigate an ever-changing nutrition landscape. Thank you #HPx2026 Sport Ireland Institute for such an amazing day 🙏 I can't believe that this is the 10th year of HPx Nutrition & I'm delighted to have attended every year 😊. It has firmly been added to my 'not to be missed' list. Such an amazing privilege to have had over 35 staff and students from across Atlantic Technological University Sport and Exercise Nutrition attend the event today. When HPx first started we were only beginning with our Sport and Exercise Nutrition programmes at ATU and I am so proud to see how much our MSc programmes have grown across our Galway and Sligo campuses. Huge thanks to our programme leads Nóra Ní Fhlannagáin Karen Keane Kevin Cradock PhD 👌👏 Each year one of my favourite parts of HPx is the athlete panel, it never fails to give incredible insights 😍 All the speakers were superb but particular highlights for me were Nicola Guess discussing CGMs & what glucose fluctuations mean (and don't mean) in elite sport & Orla O'Sullivan whose passion and knowledge around the microbiome was infectious 🦠 If you haven't attended previously, I cannot recommend it highly enough! Well done Sharon Madigan PhD MSc RD SENr FFSEM & Arthur Dunne for putting such a great day together and thanks SarahJane Cullen for your super MC'ing 👏👏
