[edit]Global IP block exempt for Ahmed Mohammed-wiki
[edit]- Global user: Ahmed Mohammed-wiki (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
I am requesting global IP block exemption because Wikimedia Commons is currently blocked/inaccessible in Yemen. As a result, I need to use a VPN to access and contribute to the site, but editing via VPN is automatically blocked. I require this exemption to bypass the proxy restriction and continue making constructive contributions. Thanks, --Ahmed Mohammed-wiki (talk) 20:28, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
Done I've added a short-term exemption. As this is a single project issue, you may follow up directly with your project for a longer exemption. See c:Commons:IP block exemption for their information. — xaosflux Talk 20:34, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you @Xaosflux for granting the temporary exemption.
- However, since Wikimedia Commons is blocked in Yemen, I must keep my VPN turned on while browsing and contributing to other Wikimedia projects as well (such as Meta, Arabic Wikipedia, etc.). If I only have a local exemption on Commons, I will be blocked from editing any other project while the VPN is active.
- This is why I specifically requested a **Global IP block exemption**. Could you please consider extending this to a long-term global exemption? Thank you! --Ahmed Mohammed-wiki (talk) 22:05, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- Check your VPN settings, most allow you to configure what domains to run it on, seems like you only need it for one. Alternatively you can NOT run it on the other domains (e.g. ar.wikipedia.org). You primarily only otherwise seem to use arwiki, and the arwiki admins can also give you a local exemption. — xaosflux Talk 00:09, 22 October 2026 (UTC)
Requests for other global permissions

Due to archive.today incident, I've started to replace existing archive[.]today links with web[.]archive[.]org ones, which can be seen in my global edits. Also, I'm not handling this particular task, despite large enough, with bots, as all such links must be reviewed manually by humans, in case it doesn't exist or exist under another URL (redirected) on Internet Archive. This would require me to query lots of data, hence I'm here requesting for the user right. (I talked with EPIC on this issue) --🐠 formerly U.T. 09:36, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Wouldn't the database (eg using Toolforge/Quarry) be a better choice? Leaderboard (talk) 12:42, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- I might say that I prefer (nearly) real time query results tho... 🐠 formerly U.T. 12:49, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- +1 The right is clearly a technical right, and there's no reason not to grant it if someone thinks they need it however, I don't think it serves your purpose. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 18:10, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Not quite getting on why that matters? Leaderboard (talk) 18:15, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Even if this workflow needs human review to process, why should these all need additional editors to review (i.e. to NOT flag them as bot edits)? — xaosflux Talk 18:37, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- If we merely search by URL and replace, then there could be some errors: not all data on archive[.]today are also available on web[.]archive[.]org. Let alone, sometimes these sites use different URL schemes. I've encountered multiple such cases, especially on de:. 🐠 formerly U.T. 01:32, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- OK, but the intermediate layer (i.e, checking whether there is a web.archive.org equivalent for a certain archive.today link) does not use MediaWiki APIs, right? In other words, I am not quite getting the need of real-time API functionality for your use-case. Leaderboard (talk) 06:47, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- The "query pages linking to a given website" function in AWB / JWB does use MediaWiki APIs, if I understand correctly? Real-time is preferred (though not strictly required), as pages are constantly updated, I shall update my working list frequently, should someone else has changed, then move on to next one. As for the step you're asking, it doesn't involve, for it's another system. 🐠 formerly U.T. 07:16, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Oh you're using AWB for this? It may be easier to use the database: mediawikiwiki:Manual:Externallinks_table and I'm a little sceptical about the real-time claim given the natural delay with your workflow. I don't think the lag is going to be significant, and an advantage of using the database is that you can filter by the most recent edit to the page, for instance.
- To be clear, this isn't meant to be an oppose; if you want to stick with your existing workflow or don't want to deal with databases, having API high limit requestor will help and I can support it. But for high-volume tasks, database > API in most cases; the exception being when latency is paramount. Leaderboard (talk) 10:08, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Well, I'd really prefer working with page texts, at least now...Seemingly backend database is less intuitive for me. However, I might explore and find better ways for myself on this task: after all, it's a long-running one. 🐠 formerly U.T. 12:54, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- On the database point, as Leaderboard said, the replicas are pretty much real-time with production. There can be some lag, but it's usually very low and mostly only happens during peak hours. You can fork and run queries 109406 and 109369, which should help you get the details you're looking to work with. Also, the domain is stored backwards for searching, so
archive.isshows up asis.archive.andarchive.phasph.archive.. Max (talk) 12:33, 18 September 2026 (UTC)

- +1 per WikiBayer, honestly. I don't think there needs to be a lot of, or even much at all, scrutiny as to the amount of need for this group. The requester has said they need it for a task, so I see no reason to hurdle them. Some other possibilities have been proposed above, but I don't see why this request should be refused if the requestor wishes to proceed. EggRoll97 (talk) 03:00, 19 September 2026 (UTC)

- Ikan, what is the duration of this project? — xaosflux Talk 09:13, 19 September 2026 (UTC)
- To be honest, I'm not sure. But I reckon it not very urgent, therefore, I might not push myself too hard to handle this specific task as fast as possible. 🐠 formerly U.T. 09:17, 19 September 2026 (UTC)

I would like to request global CAPTCHA exemption. I have made 7,227 edits across Wikimedia projects, including 2,193 on English Wikipedia and 3,808 on Commons, and have contributed since 2003.
I upload my own photos to Commons and replace low quality photos with better photos across all language editions of Wikipedia, for example Jerónimos Monastery.
I also use other users' photos, not just my own.
I repeatedly encounter CAPTCHAs which slows me down a lot.
Thank you for considering my request.Kent Wang (talk) 23:21, 4 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Kent Wang: have you tried using User:Krinkle/Tools/Global SUL? This tool autocreates an account for you on every wiki; since the default is usually 4 days + 0 edits, that should solve most of the issues you seem to face. //shb (t • c) 22:17, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
- I have just installed it, thank you. But Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic all require 50 local edits, so that's a lot of CAPTCHAs for me to do. Kent Wang (talk) 00:23, 8 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Kent Wang: Can you point me to one or two projects where you've encountered a CAPTCHA? Max (talk) 01:14, 7 October 2026 (UTC)
- Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic. I see that they all require 50 local edits, so that's a lot of CAPTCHAs for me to do. Kent Wang (talk) 00:22, 8 October 2026 (UTC)
- Do you encounter CAPTCHAs because AbuseFilters have conditions requiring you to be autoconfirmed for certain edits, or are they triggered by regular edits, like adding or replacing images? hCaptcha normally runs passively on regular edits, so most of the time it doesn't show a CAPTCHA that you actually have to solve. Max (talk) 13:18, 8 October 2026 (UTC)
- I'm just adding or replacing images, so I don't think it's AbuseFilters. hCaptcha doesn't trigger every time, but I go pretty fast with multiple tabs open. Kent Wang (talk) 19:03, 8 October 2026 (UTC)

Global Rollbacker, and captcha expemtion for Aesthetic of me

Hello, i need the userrights for editing and patrol on commons, id.wiki and other Wiki , thanks, Best Regard --✰𝔄𝔢𝔰𝔱𝔥𝔢𝔱𝔦𝔠 𝔬𝔣 𝔪𝔢✰ (talk) 19:04, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- GR must be applied for at #Requests_for_global_rollback_permissions. Also you ALREADY have rollback idwiki; commonswiki has a local request process you could use. You are also ALREADY captcha exempt on these projects. I don't think you have a good understanding of what you are requesting here. Can you explain better? — xaosflux Talk 19:15, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
