About us
The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) is administered by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in cooperation with the United-Nations Environment Programme / Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP). Established in 1976 by the decision of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea Against Pollution (the Barcelona Convention of 1976), REMPEC’s mandate is historically to strengthen the capacities of coastal States in the Mediterranean region and to facilitate co-operation among them in order to combat massive marine pollution by oil, particularly by developing national capacities to combat oil pollution and by establishing a regional information system with a view to dealing with marine pollution emergencies. The Centre’s mandate was extended over the years in conformity with the decisions of the Contracting Parties with a view to addressing relevant emerging issues and the respective global developments with a particular focus on preventive measures against pollution from ships. In 2001, with a view to the adoption of the new Protocol concerning Cooperation in Preventing Pollution from Ships and, in Cases of Emergency, combating Pollution of the Mediterranean Sea (Prevention and Emergency Protocol, 2002), the Contracting Parties reaffirmed the involvement of the Centre in activities related to prevention of, preparedness for and response to marine pollution.

🌊 A cleaner Mediterranean starts with united action! On 7–8 October 2026, REMPEC brought Mediterranean countries and regional partners together in Malta to advance discussions on the possible designation of the Mediterranean Sea, as a whole, as a Nitrogen Oxides Emission Control Area (Med NOₓ ECA). Building on the successful entry into effect of the Med SOₓ ECA in May 2025, this initiative represents another opportunity for Mediterranean countries to demonstrate regional unity, shared ambition and collective responsibility in reducing air pollution from ships and protecting our shared marine environment. One sea. One region. One shared responsibility. 🌍 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/exZKEmTp #REMPEC #MedNOxECA #OneMediterranean #CleanShipping #RegionalCooperation International Maritime Organization UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention

High-Level Meeting celebrating the 50th anniversary of REMPEC in Malta UNEP/MAP Coordinator Tatjana Hema joined Ministers, representatives of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention, and partners at the High-Level Meeting celebrating the 50th anniversary of REMPEC under the theme “Our Mediterranean – Our Responsibility”. The Meeting featured keynote addresses by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Domínguez, UNEP/MAP Coordinator Tatjana Hema, H.E. Dr Miriam Dalli, Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour of Malta, and H.E. Dr Chris Bonett, Minister for Sustainable Mobility of Malta. In her keynote address to the Meeting, Ms. Hema referred to the recent fiftieth anniversaries of UNEP/MAP and REMPEC as two milestones in one Mediterranean journey, referring to REMPEC as a successfull story and great achievement of the 22 Parties to the Barcelona Convention, UNEP and IMO. The MAP Coordinator highlighted the role of the UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention system as a framework that brings Mediterranean countries together through dialogue, knowledge-sharing, solidarity and collective action. Reminding the participants that the Mediterranean cannot be effectively protected by individual countries acting alone and underscored the value of Mediterranean cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss and emerging pressures from a rapidly transforming maritime sector she said that since our challenges are shared, therefore, our responses must also be shared.” As REMPEC enters its sixth decade, the anniversary provides an opportunity to build on five decades of cooperation and achievements, including the designation of the Mediterranean Sea as an Emission Control Area for Sulphur Oxides and Particulate Matter (Med SOx ECA), while continuing efforts to protect the Mediterranean Sea and address emerging environmental challenges.

🌊 Celebrating 50 years of REMPEC The IOPC Funds was pleased to participate in a high-level meeting marking the 50th anniversary of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) in Valletta, Malta this week. Held within the framework of the Malta Maritime Summit, the event brought together Ministers, senior government representatives and leaders from international organisations across the Mediterranean region to reflect on five decades of progress in preventing and responding to marine pollution from ships. Our Deputy Director and Head of the Claims Department, Liliana Monsalve, congratulated REMPEC on this important milestone and highlighted the value of our longstanding partnership in supporting the implementation of the international liability and compensation regime. Ms Monsalve also participated in a panel discussion on REMPEC's 50 years of work and the importance of international cooperation in prevention, preparedness and response to marine pollution incidents. We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with REMPEC in supporting States, sharing expertise and promoting the effective implementation of key maritime conventions. 🔗 Read more: https://iopcfunds.org/fjkj #REMPEC50 #MarinePollution #MaritimeSafety #EnvironmentalProtection #Shipping #MaritimeIndustry #Mediterranean #IOPCFunds #InternationalCooperation #MaritimeConventions

🌊 50 years of REMPEC – 50 years of cooperation for our Mediterranean On Tuesday, we celebrated a very special milestone: the 50th Anniversary of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC). Established in 1976, REMPEC has evolved from a regional centre focused on oil pollution response into a key platform for prevention, preparedness, response and cooperation on marine pollution from ships across the Mediterranean. Over five decades, the Centre has worked hand in hand with Mediterranean countries, IMO, UNEP/MAP and a wide network of partners to strengthen national capacities, promote regional cooperation and support the protection of our shared sea. The High-Level Meeting was an opportunity not only to look back with pride at what has been achieved, but, more importantly, to look ahead. The challenges facing the Mediterranean are evolving rapidly — from climate change and the transition to low-carbon shipping, to emerging pollutants, increasing maritime activity and the need for stronger pollution prevention and preparedness. Our response must evolve with them. The message from this anniversary is therefore clear: Our Mediterranean – Our Responsibility. The next 50 years will require the same spirit of cooperation that has defined REMPEC since its establishment — but with even greater ambition, innovation and collective action. We are immensely proud of REMPEC and, above all, of the people and institutions that have contributed to its journey over the past five decades. 50 years behind us. The next chapter starts today. #REMPEC50 #OurMediterraneanOurResponsibility #Mediterranean #MarineEnvironment #MarinePollution #IMO #UNEP #BarcelonaConvention #Maritime #Cooperation
