Celebrating 35 Years: Alison Brown's Journey at Jarden This year marks 35 years since Alison Brown joined Jarden in 1991 - arriving with a wealth of trading floor experience after several years as a “chalkie” on the boards of the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX). Ali began her working life straight from school in 1985, aged just 16, manually posting live share prices onto the NZX boards - a role demanding a sharp memory, a calm head and a thick skin. She was on the floor for the 1987 share market crash, one of the most dramatic days in NZ market history. Keeping up with the falling prices took its toll - by her own account, her arm cramped and her chalk ran out as she tried to keep pace. Speaking to the New Zealand Herald in 2007, she recalled: “Brierley was the third stock down and I was on that for a good five minutes. The minute I put the quote up it would be just gone again.” When the Auckland exchange closed its trading floor in June 1991, Ali joined Jarden as a receptionist, bringing the same calm-under-pressure attitude with her. Since then, she's covered office management, IT, front-office support and project work - including Jarden's Commercial Bay fit-out and onboarding clients as the firm expanded into Australia. She joined a business of under 100 people that has since grown into a trans-Tasman operation. Ali has long been the one organising Jarden's corporate client meetings, looking out for colleagues along the way. Thirty-five years on, her career remains a rare thread connecting Jarden's earliest days to where the firm stands today - and it's better for it.
