Project Overview

The Outpost team was delighted to return to the world of Yellowstone for the second season of 1923.

Led by Overall VFX Supervisor Kevin Blank and internally by Outpost VFX Supervisor Robin Lamontagne, our Montreal team delivered over 170 shots for the series, with a particular focus on creature integration, environments and adding snow to a number of sequences.

This “winterization” was particularly important for series continuity and was necessitated by that most unpredictable of things – the weather. With the showrunners banking on snow coverage in Montana during the winter, an unseasonable lack of snow resulted in the need for a significant amount of digital snow that could cover trees and environments.

Creature work made up a substantial part of Outpost’s award. As ranchers, the Dutton family wrangle a serious amount of cattle, but achieving the amount required in camera would’ve been extremely difficult, and so the filmmakers looked to Outpost and other vendors to create and integrate digital cattle throughout the series.

1923 is a spinoff of the immensely popular series Yellowstone. Set in the early 20th century, it follows the exploits of a previous generation of the Dutton ranching family from the mainline series.

Season two of 1923 launched in February 2025 and is available to stream now in multiple territories on Paramount+.
