Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne
Elswick is a district of Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear, England. It is not far from Newcastle City Centre and is located close to the River Tyne.[1] Elswick has many notable buildings, historic and modern. This includes Newcastle Utilita Arena, Newcastle College buildings, St Michael's Church, and St Stephen's Church.[2][3][4] It has flats in the Cruddas Park estate, the main one being Cruddas Park House, which has a shopping centre and a campus of Newcastle College.
Hadrian's Wall ran near Elswick. Elswick was a colliery for coal mining in the 1300s, where the Prior of Tynemouth (its owner) called the area by name, "Elstewyke".[5] Elstewyke means something similar to noble farm.[6] Then on, Elswick was owned by the Crown from 1539 to 1628 until King Charles I sold it. Lead Works were built on the area in 1778 until 1951.[7]
