If your inbox has been filling up with clients forwarding HMRC letters about missing MTD quarterly updates, you’re not alone. The inevitable questions follow: Have I done something wrong? Has my software failed? Will this negatively affect my client? And, perhaps from some clients: what have I been paying you for if HMRC says you haven’t done the job? Robyn Milstead would recommend not ignoring the letters but instead taking the time to understand why they’ve been generated to ensure everything is in order for future quarters. Below is a comprehensive list to help you troubleshoot: https://lnkd.in/e8ZDrGkZ

Strangely, at the start of Budget week, it could be argued that we know more about the various opposition parties’ intentions for changes to the tax regime than we do about His Majesty’s Government. One proposal that might sound perfectly sensible at first glance deserves closer examination. With some fanfare, we were told that if the result goes the right way for the Conservatives and the next general election, everybody’s family home would be exempted from inheritance tax. What might the consequences be? Philip Fisher looks beyond the front door and finds a few rooms for improvement: https://lnkd.in/eKAps__F

Las Vegas is gearing up for Formula 1 to take over the streets in a few weeks (much to the chagrin of locals navigating the three-month road closures). But this week at Oracle NetSuite’s SuiteWorld, the only race drawing attention is the ERP vendor's accelerating push into artificial intelligence. Fittingly, given Oracle’s sponsorship of the Red Bull Racing team, NetSuite founder Evan Goldberg centered his keynote on a clear finish line: the autonomous suite. In true Vegas style, the keynote opened with that vision interpreted as an elaborate dance routine, complete with somersaulting gymnasts, synchronised dancers and glowsticks. Only in Vegas, eh. 📰Get the full story from Richard Hattersley: https://lnkd.in/eFCE7bK4

Craig Ogilvie described the first quarterly update for MTD as “not a walk in the park”. Some might say that’s an understatement. However, that’s in the past, and attention has quickly turned to what comes next and how accountants can sustain this work. In the latest MTD Accountability Club, in association with Sage, AccountingWEB’s managing editor Richard Hattersley was joined by Chris Downing, director for accountants and bookkeepers at Sage, Ogilvie, director of MTD at HMRC, and Rebecca Benneyworth, principal of Rebecca Benneyworth & Co. Part one covered the audience’s burning questions, so now it’s time for part two – what did the panel have to say about delaying the rollout of the next cohort, implementing a soft landing and dealing with quarter three? 📌Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e5ru23qV

In July 2026 Randeep S. asked HMRC how many taxes it administers, along with current totals for reliefs and extra-statutory concessions. It could not supply the figures within the Freedom of Information Act's cost limit. HMRC said there were different ways to define a tax and that counting reliefs would require specialists to review its regimes. That is a revealing answer from the department that administers those rules and now shares responsibility for simplifying them. HMRC described the work needed to assemble the figures, rather than providing a running count. A promise to simplify needs a clearer starting point than a total assembled only when somebody asks. Without a readily available overview, who is checking the burden that successive additions place on the people using the system? 🔔 Don’t miss it: https://lnkd.in/ew8HMp3T
