Of all the things a curriculum can give a child, a love of reading may be the one that lasts longest. Over the years I have worked with many schools where reading sat at the heart of the curriculum, and the difference was visible well beyond English lessons. Vocabulary grew. Confidence grew. Children began to see themselves in stories and to imagine lives beyond their own. I have also seen how unequal access to books can be. For some children, the only books they meet are the ones school puts in front of them. That makes what happens in school, and what we can extend into the home, all the more important. So I was pleased to hear that Pickatale, as official partners of the National Year of Reading, is working with the National Literacy Trust and publishing partners to offer every primary school a free digital reading library for the 2026-27 academic year. Children can access over 200 books in class and at home, including titles donated by much-loved publishers, authors and children's brands. "All reading is reading." Comics, magazines, non-fiction, even text messages, it all counts. That was one of the takeaways from our National Year of Reading 2026 panel, Motivating Every Reader: Real Impact for Young Learners, where Lulu Mazzocco Skantze from Storytime shared what actually gets reluctant readers reaching for a story.
