It\u2019s time to bring them home.<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">Across the globe, outdated laws and systems are failing us. Instead of community support, millions are met with coercion. Instead of recovery, they are met with walls.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\"><b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Care Not Custody<\/b> is a global movement to turn the tide. To protect our rights, we must address the systemic failure of institutionalisation.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"12\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Legislation Gap:<\/b> 73% of countries have yet to align their mental health laws with international human rights standards.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Custody Crisis:<\/b> Over 8.4 million people are admitted to mental health hospitals every year &#8211; many in facilities that rely on outdated, coercive practices.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Financing Gap:<\/b> In many low- and middle-income countries, more than 80% of mental health budgets are still directed towards large psychiatric hospitals rather than community-based services.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Human Cost:<\/b> People with severe mental health conditions die 10 to 20 years earlier than the general population, often due to the neglect of their physical health in healthcare settings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                                \n                            <\/div>\n            \n                    <\/div>\n        \n            <\/section>\n    \n\n    <section class=\"long-form-content  long-form-content--gradient-background background--gradient trigger-sub-nav\" id=\"why-care\">\n        <div class=\"container long-form-content__container\">\n            <div class=\"long-form-content__wrapper\">\n                                    <h2 data-path-to-node=\"13\"><b data-path-to-node=\"13\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Choose: Care.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">We are campaigning for a world where every government chooses <b data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"62\">Care<\/b>. coercion.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"15,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Dignity<\/b> over stigma.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"15,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Recovery<\/b> over restraint.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16\">By investing in local, quality, person-centred support, we
