The Wandering Glider (Pantala flavescens) occurs across most of the United States and can be very common at times. Gliders have especially large rear wings and seem to stay in flight much of the time. The glider shown in the top image was resting on a weed stalk in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in June 2003. The shot was taken with a Canon EOS 10D and 70-200 mm F2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender and 550 EX flash. The lower shot was taken in June 2004 at the same location.
