Laura released the album Mothers Spiritual in 1984 when she was 37 years
old. She was triumphant with its release because, as she told me, this
particular album was the closest she ever came to perfection. That is,
Mothers Spiritual was as close as possible to what she had in her mind and
heart for her musical creation, and the processes of recording, tracking,
editing and mixing were the closest they could be. She said its 95% there.
One can only wonder how close any of her other works may have been.
Spring is slowly working its way to Connecticut where Laura lived a large part
of her life and where she died. On this, the 9th anniversary of her
passing, we wanted to balance the sorrow of loss with the undeniable sweetness
of emerging life all around. It is this desire that has prompted the selection
of Melody in the Sky for everyone to hear. The song is so very Laura, so full
of luscious life, never more so than when she was 37 years of age, in her
prime. She was like springtime then, on the verge of summer. She had great
satisfaction and joie de vivre in abundance. I remember it all so well, with
a sense of gladness still faintly outlined in a pastel shade of sadness. May we
all, and how can we not, take great pleasure in this so very beautiful song and
season.
Work continues toward the creation of Decembers Boudoir, the working title
of the film documentary with Maria Florio as producer and director. Some of you
have kindly offered both money and/or time toward this end. It is touching and
greatly appreciated. All we can say is thank you. At this time, though, the
project isnt far enough along to take up any offers, but please hold the
thought.we might just call on you.
However, Maria and I have discussed the possibility of using many of your
comments throughout the film, helping to narrate the story as it were. So many
of your comments are fascinating, intelligent, intense and reflective of the
impact Laura has had on you. They have been a joy to receive and Ive kept all
of them throughout these years, always knowing that they hold meaning and
wondering if, how, and when to use them. I know that Laura would be greatly
satisfied with this approach toward a narrative in her film. Its direct,
honest, and heart-felt.
More to come over time, with love.
