TV Tidbits: NYT Hearts Sarah Silverman

  • Not one, but two pieces in The New York Timesabout Sarah Silverman’s new program on Comedy Central, “The Sarah Silverman Program”. Is the new show really that good, or does Ms. Silverman have a fan club at the Gray Lady? (NYT piece no. 1, NYT piece no. 2).

  • EW’s Mark Harris on Isaiah Washington and the Official Entertainment Remorse Machine: “Pop culture (and that includes all of us who are pop culture consumers) has become addicted to a cycle of misbehavior followed by regret followed by a warm wallow in forgiveness in which we agree to pretend that saying you’re sorry undoes whatever was done.” (EW)

  • Mo Rocca’s in Miami covering the Super Bowl for “The Tonight Show”. No, you read that right. (Chicago Tribune)

The Hills: “Out With The Old…,” “When You Least Expect It,” and “The Best Night Ever”

OMG, new season of “The Hills”! I kinda missed this show. Sure, I got tired of feeling jealous of Lauren’s apartment, boyfriend, car, wardrobe, job, whatever, but I really grew to like her. You’d get the feeling that she was kinda passive, not being too chatty (that’s what roommate Heidi was for) and all, but her heavily lined eyes said so much!

Studio 60: “Monday” and “The Harriet Dinner”

The thing about “Studio 60″ is that I feel exhausted after watching an episode of “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” Not because there is so much action and suspense, but because almost nothing seems to happen but there is so much to say. I mean, I’m a pretty smart girl, and I’m still not 100% sure if Jordan returns Danny’s feelings for her. Then again, I’m pretty sure that Jordan isn’t sure of that, either. In this double-recap, I’ll update you by character, as opposed to by episode. We’ll see if this works or not. Normal recapping format to return next week.

30 Rock: “The Baby Show,” “The Rural Juror,” and “The Head and the Hair”

Seriously, you guys, this isn’t a recap so much as a flashback, a flashback to the heady days of the very beginning of 2007. I mean, doesn’t the winner of the Golden Globe and the SAG Award for his work on “30 Rock”, Alec Baldwin, deserve better? Sure he does, and so do you. So here are my recaps for the last three episodes. Just the thing to prep you for this week’s episode, “Black Tie”.

TV Tidbits

  • Win an Oscar, ruin your career? Sure — just ask F. Murray Abraham (TV Guide)

  • Oh, J.T., who’s going to wear that smelly mascot costume now? “Degrassi’s” Ryan Cooley says goodbye (the TV addict)

  • Miss USA Tara Conner confesses to “Today” (in an interview which airs tomorrow, so get your head around that): “I have done cocaine, yeah.” Huh — is that the sort of admission you’d make during the interview portion of a pageant, or would that be what you’d do for your talent? I’m just asking. (Page Six)

Episode 1 – Do you have love for New York?

Oh my sweet, dear Lord in Heaven. Grant me the strength. This is going to be… ridiculous.

And I absolutely cannot wait. So let’s get to it.

Right off the bat, New York basically spoon-feeds me material as she, and I am not even kidding, lathers up her body with Vaseline. Don’t kill me, but, Vaseline? Did I miss the episode of Flavor of Love where Deelishis SETS HER ON FIRE? Just sayin’, I didn’t see any third-degree burns.

Yeah, House, remember? It was that show about the doctor…

House is (finally) back! Hope the gang has had a great vacation – we’ve had to suffer through a lot of bad American Idol auditions (umm…Ian, anyone? If anyone gives him a record deal, I will kill myself!) Well, Hugh Laurie has obviously had a very productive few weeks, winning both the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for his role as our favorite TV doc. (Yay, Hugh!) Me? I got both seasons of A Bit of Fry and Laurie for Christmas, so my “Hugh cravings” have been held at bay. But now, on to the show…

House is clinic-bound, making up to Cuddy for covering for him in court. Yay, clinic! Apparently there’s a rash of STD’s in the northeast. House’s first 3 patients (a young man, woman and elderly lady) all claim to be afflicted, and Greg’s quickly exhausting his rubber glove supply. He’s also getting “tired of wiping crotches”. Ummm…TMI….But wait, all of a sudden a guy starts running hysterically (and screaming) around the clinic waiting area. House trips him and injects him with a paralytic. He may be able to get out of clinic duty by diagnosing crazy, “runaround Lou”.

Our crazed clinic patient was tough to put down. House and the ducklings ponder possible diagnoses – is he in pain or just nuts? It ends up that he has a cockroach in his ear. Nothing else, but it is pretty gross. House authorizes tests on all of the ducklings’ theories just to keep him off clinic duty. Smart cookie. Wilson encounters the good doc in a jogging park where he’s just watching. It’s also the last place Cuddy would look for him. Meanwhile, a man comes into the clinic and sees Cameron. He was diagnosed months earlier with inoperable lung cancer – I’m not really sure why he is in the hospital now – maybe he needs to find a place to die with dignity? Cuddy finds out where House is and calls him on the carpet. House is back on Vicodin and has given up on rehab (anyone surprised to hear that?) He’s left with a big decision - clinic duty or jail? House opts for the former and ends up dealing with Anal Retentive Guy, who has Athlete’s foot in his nose from using toenail clippers to trim his nose hair. Ewww…..House comes up with a new plan, he is offering $50 bribes to get the patients to leave. Cuddy isn’t happy with House’s shenanigans. She makes a deal with him – she’ll give him10 bucks for each patient he can treat without touching them he must pay her 10 bucks for each he has to touch. He starts well, getting the patients to self-check lumps and pulses. The STD results are finally back – only the one young lady has an STD. It’s Chlamydia - no real biggie, it’s easily treatable. The lady freaks and, if you saw any of the 9 bajillion promos for this episode, you know she’s the POTW and she’s been raped.

Giveway: “The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency” Season 1 DVD

The very nice folks at Razor & Tie are sending me season 1 of “The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency” to give to a lucky PopCultureJunkies reader.

I haven’t yet figured out how this giveaway will work yet — should the DVD go to the first person to e-mail me after I post this message? First person to write a sonnet on Janice Dickinson? Whoever correctly guesses what number I’m thinking at this very moment? How about this: 100 words or less on why Janice Dickinson is worth watching. Send your entry via to jasmine@popculturejunkies.com, or feel free to leave it as a comment to this post.

Winner gets the DVD, and their entry posted here. Deadline is Thursday, February 1, 2007 at 10:00 Central. Restrictions and rules? Um, illegal immigrant new moms should be safe, as it’s a DVD and not $25k in cash and prizes.

Surreal Life RAWKS!

Now the A-List and B-List teams are established and starting tonight, they play against each other - the losing team has to send a member home. Verne returned from his “engagement” (I wonder what it was. Anyone else?) and learned of his new living arrangements (the food outside his door as well as a velvet rope and a doorbell to ring to get to the A-list side – by invitation only.) Meanwhile, the A-listers are living it up - eating gourmet food and getting back rubs. Surprise – Verne’s pissed. Traci is trying to get Ron to be her A-list “sugar daddy” and is still really unhappy with her status. She wants everyone to know that she’s so much more than a “Baywatch bimbo” and is taking the game a little too personally. Brigitte is complaining on the phone to her Italian boyfriend Matti (I thought she was married to him…) and says she wants to go home. But wait – it’s a message from Robin. Today treats to tempt the tastebuds – the A-listers get a private cooking lesson and the B-listers get a feast of a different sort – hmmm…Turns out the A-list meal is going to be prepared by Todd English from Iron Chef. He’s making lobster spaghetti carbonara. Andrea is disturbed in the kitchen watching the lobster massacre. So what are the B-listers going to dine on?

We discover that the Bs are dining at B-List Wieners – a fully appointed hot dog cart. Manny’s game and decides to keep it ghetto, Chyna also didn’t seem to care. The As are enjoying their feast (I saw peas – yucky!) Meanwhile vegetarian Traci has something else to complain about – she doesn’t eat doggies, so she gets a pickle dog. Manny and Chyna lead the charge (accompanied by Traci and Verne, but not Brigitte) to check out the A-list side and decide to up their game and put up a good fight. Traci is forced to be the grated cheese girl, which of course irritates her to no end. Rob goes after Brigitte who is “over it”. He lures her over with some sangria. She comes in, surveys the spread, and decides to head back over to her side of the house. Party pooper, says Ron. After bananas and chocolate fondue, Robin added to dessert with stacks of dollar bills for a special A-list dance party in a makeshift champagne room – complete with strippers. Family man Rob gives his wad of cash to Verne - who says it would only last him a few minutes - and took off. Verne was in “breast-s heaven”. Traci invited a few of the girls back to the mansion. Ron was with a stripper who decided to rest on Rob’s bed. Rob walked in and was not too pleased. Actually, he was furious. He storms off to the b-list side to vent. Ron (the instigator) follows in and they have a very vocal discussion.
