It ain't all Park Avenue, Man.

Darth Vader, a star turn as Robert Zimmerman. Fourth wall: Nico takes a break from Nick Rhodes or whatever the guy's name is from Duran Duran. And Jimmy Fallon, your thing is stuck on you like 90210 on Luke Perry; ain't no Chuck Wein gonna do anything about that. What else? VU, per usual. Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick: the drugs and the dirt of glamour, that kind of thing. Some punchline about L'eggs; a little Insidery Scoop. Real voicey-like. Jesus, I can't believe you people have to come up with twelve posts of played-out drivel like this every single day. Or that the new guy thinks that's where it's at. No wonder you take to the drink. Clearly, Gothamist's the way to go.

Is that a convincing penis?

That's One Way to Screw Amanda Congdon

It's common knowledge that Denton and Lockhart do some pretty shady shit with Gawker Media and often hide the truth with "no comment" or a cold stone stare in the face, but this is really unbelievable. I hope there's a SWAT Ethics squad rappelling down the side of a building right now.

Gawker Media mystery ads appear on YouTube [News.com]

Thanks for the tip, M.A. and J.F.!

UPDATE: My sources tell me that Nick and Lock planned this whole thing deliberately and leaked it when the time was right. They're laughing about it right now. They wanted to create a media story out of using copyrighted material. Apparently they thrive on this type of attention and rely on the assumption that no one will ever really call them on their shit for fear of a link ban. (Talking about bloggers here, the court of public opinion will be greater than any corporate lawsuit.) Sick fucks. Kinda reminds me of something Bill Gates said earlier: "Does honesty matter in these things, or if you're really cool, that means you get to be a lying person whenever you feel like it? There's not even the slightest shred of truth to it."

YM Linking-Diggless Debate #1

Image
On Jan 8, the 2007-2008 nationwide high school debate topic was announced.
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its public health assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa.
Here's your chance to be an aff-hole or rotten neg. Locker-slam your opponent in the comments and the winner, as determined by me, will win a copy of The Smoking Gun's The Dog Dialed 911. Debate ends at 12pm EST, Friday Feb 9 (or, if my instincts are correct, in the next 5 minutes).

Softer Tits Will Greet You (Dragons Awake!)

  • Paul Weller recently made my TO-DONT list. Kenneth in the (212) had a similar experience on the 2nd night.

  • Franz discovers my cousin Neil's blog and music log from the comments on this post. I've linked to him before.

  • From another older relative: "I saw that article by Jessica Pressler. Since then, I've been trying to think of what the equivalent of 'blue-eyed soul' would be for black rock 'n rollers. In case that's a generational thang, 'blue-eyed soul' groups included the Righteous Brothers and, although I never understood it, The Four Seasons. The R&B; jocks in Baltimore referred to them as such, something I doubt would be tolerated today."

    92Y Ta-Da

An AP writer put the 92nd Street Y on her big "to do" list while comedian Wendy Spero does the 92YQ even though she's sick in L.A.

    New recurring blog features:
  • Ask the Parenting Center
  • Tisch Music Talk
  • Makor Soundboard
  • TODONE: John Varvatos Shirts

Why do this? Look, sometimes when you sign up for a job, you follow it through, no matter where it goes. As Slim Charles says, you fight on the lie.

In pursuit of all things Dentonian, it’s starting to get a little ugly, and desperate here. We can’t even count on sac to comment anymore, so a boot has been put in my ass to generate some ‘new’ content. And by new, we mean, lazy retreads of Gawker material.

Why do I do this, as opposed to the royal we? Well, you do all you can to help a guy close the deal, and Krucoff has yet to achieve blogger hook up Nirvana (really, I’m not sure he’s achieved blogger hook up Piscataway) -- one Mr. Lockhart Steele. Porn name aside, I like to think of their relationship like that of Lara Flynn Boyle and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Happiness. Lock, all nervous energy, overachieving shell of coke-fueled sexual frustration, and Kruc, maybe a well intentioned schlub, maybe sexual predator. There they are, just feet from each other, crank dodgeball calls, narratively hopeless, even though we all root for them to reach out to each other to satisfy long frustrated passion. That, or to at least spoog on the wall like Dash Snow.

Why else? Well, that should be obvious. Because every time someone in this town recommends something to you, a restaurant, a book, a film, the first thing you do is not thank them for making a considered effort to share something they value, but instead making a counter recommendation that shows that you instantly dissected the reasons they clearly prefer the inferior and provide a corrected path that not only illuminates for them a higher level of discrimination, but reminds that you are cooler, better and more successful than they. Eventually, we all go to that Devendra Banhart concert in a dumpster.

So, here, provided by a service of the surly, perpetual also rans is ToDone, one thing occasionally recommended for you, by us, better than anything those middlebrow sucks over at Gawker can come up with.

Look, we aren’t going to quibble with the fact that when you put on a shirt, a well made shirt, a really fucking great shirt, you not only feel like well more than the absurd amount of hard earned scratch you just surrendered, but you start to believe all seeming lies the tawdry aspiration brand consumption rags like GQ try to sell you every issue:

Did I suddenly get taller? Have I always had those shoulders? Can a shirt improve my posture? Will young children aspire to be me? Will this shirt get me laid?

Then perhaps you get philosophical: should I really buy a shirt for an amount that could feed an African village for a month? Then, defensive: well, that same amount could buy me barely enough real estate in TriBeCa to cover a playing card, and that doesn’t even include common charges. Hey, dude, look back in the mirror. Look at that fucking shirt!

It wipes your mind of almost any other consideration. Look, I was every stripe of counterculture asshole that didn’t require getting a tattoo over the past fifteen years. I’ve heard and expanded upon every reason to sneer at a poofter/yuppie/establishment asshole wearing a suit. But like the strange cool calm you get from an IV, the though that flooded my mind when I tried on my first Varvatos shirt was I am never buying a shirt anywhere else.

Gone were the days of wondering what I was supposed to do with the extra acre of fabric that billowed from my waist. Should I leave it loose, to catch a stray nor’easter? And why did the seam that looked like it should rest on my shoulder drape somewhere around my elbow? And why did there always seem to be a button resting uncomfortably in my belly button?

That’s because all of those shirts were designed for Chris Farley, and none were from John Varvatos. There are three basic cuts: a traditional formal shirt, an intermediary that works for causal suit and non suit, and straight casual. It probably gets more subtle than that, but after a couple visits, you can eyeball which design does what and can basically assume how it will finish, and when you can wear them.

Forget fabrics or patterns. They’re great, but they will come and go season to season. It is the way they taper and finish that makes them so amazing. My survey of the high-end off-the-rack shirt market isn’t broad, but it’s enough to note that general trends and perhaps even admit that yes, there may be no one shirt for everyone, so take with proverbial grains, etc.*

Aside from “anyone who thinks a $275 shirt is a reasonable investment” what makes this your shirt of choice? I would hazard the ideal matrix would be slightly above average height, solid but not bulky build, and a sense of design that coalesces the idea that modernism, wrought well, is tied to traditional precedents that have continued value. That’s pretty high minded for a shirt, or even more, but much of what you see won’t strike you as outré or groundbreaking. Nor will it be staid Brooks Brothers or Pink (and there are really good reasons to go there). What you will see are very careful, incremental decisions that take an idea (the shirt) that has been understood for generations and makes it right for today. And when you put it on, even the most basic French blue, you will think, with small surprise and satisfaction, that yes, there are things that approach perfection.

Then you have to figure out how to finance a whole closet of them. That part is a bitch.

*My favorite part of this post? That someone, somewhere out there read this and went, sneeringly, "Oh he wears Varvatos? Of course."

    Lynching Jessica Pressler

Oooooh, she really did it this time. First it was the 6th Borough of Philly brouharhar, now JP is getting burned for going blackface while sunbathing on a bed of indie rocks and she done irked all the wrong people - HuffPo, Style Dash, Gawker, Gothamist, Colonel K Speaks, and Brooklyn Vegan.

Thing is, she has a point but the unfortunate use of "blipster" ruined it. (Of course, my always-assuming/often-wrong conspiratorial instincts tell me it was a deliberate attempt to pull an atomic Tuskegee-wedgie over the music blog reading public and it worked. Smell the glove, people.) The well-intentioned among us like to fancy themselves as colorblind folk, but I'm sure there was a reason that one of the only black kids who was a regular at punk shows in the Crofton/Annapolis area called himself "tarbaby."

    40 Years Done Dirt Cheap

On Friday, extended family (from Japan to Darien, CT) gathered in Baltimore for Auntie Ann's funeral and the next day we celebrated my parents' 40th wedding anniversary in Crofton. Sisters-in-law spent weeks planning the big party and brother Jason logged countless/editless "Ken Burns" hours producing a 33-minute video to honor the occasion. We'll let future generations of family pundits judge the historical artifacts and whether a half hour docu-slideshow was time-appropriate, but I threw together a 4.5 minute version this morning.

    92YQ: Alex Kuczynski

ImageOf all the movies made about or highly associated with New York, what role would you have liked to be cast in?
If Roy Scheider had had a girlfriend in Marathon Man, I would have liked to play that role. (Roy Scheider, of course, being New York’s greatest iconic leading man—you know, slightly worried, slightly intellectual but really physically fit. Remember the scene of him doing the push-ups off the side of the bed in his boxer shorts in his Paris hotel room???) Unfortunately, he didn’t.

    Fat Rats and Small Cats

My recap of the 92nd Street Y Blogger Reception is up now. Lock still hasn't provided a reason as to why he canceled the Gawker Party Team's planned coverage at the last minute but one assumes his remarks about the "no name blogs" involved might have something to do with it. Fair enough, sorry we couldn't get Paris Hilton's twat to make an appearance.

It's Fun To Stay At The YMHA

Blogger Reception last night at the 92nd Street Y, covered on Galleycat and HuffPo's Eat The Press. I will add that I obviously don't care how I look these days. Blogging has made me rolly-polly and jowly-jolly but there's really no excuse for the hair.

You won't find anything on Gawker because Lock canceled their planned dispatch of the party team at the last minute. It's part of a larger institutional ban on all things related to me. Somewhere four of their commenters breathe a "thank god, enough with that talentless, not funny, do-nothing guy!"

More (of the same) on this later.

    Alex Balk: Defending Spiers

In life, it's always good to have cheerleaders. Even better if you can look up their skirt.
    Date: Wed, 5 Oct 2005 08:54:53 -0700 (PDT)

So, completely unrelated to the EGREGIOUS, MALICIOUS AND INACCURATE ITEM POSTED TODAY ON A WEBSITE THAT HASN'T BEEN WORTH READING IN A YEAR, I was thinking about M. Elizabeth Spiers and the forthcoming sale of her novel, which, reliable sources inform me (UNLIKE VARIOUS TROLL-SIZED HARPIES WHO POST INVECTIVE WITHOUT RECOURSE TO FACT, I ACTUALLY DID SOME RESEARCH) should be fairly soon, and I thought that we might all get together to celebrate. Not a huge group, but a decent sized number of people who love Liz and want to congratulate her on her success. Plus, we haven't all been together in a while, so it would be good to see everyone. I've scheduled “drinks” for Thursday, October 20, time and date T.K., but it would be lovely if a bunch of you joined me and SURPRISED her. I know that some of you are closer to her and may want to do something else to celebrate, so do let me know if I'm stepping on any toes, but if you'd like to join in, please let me know. You can forward this to anyone close to Liz that I might have left off, but let's not pass it along to any VICIOUS, SLIME-SLINGING SOCIOPATHS WHO WOULDN'T KNOW FUNNY IF IT WALKED UP TO HER AND HANDED HER A BUSINESS CARD READING "FUNNY." Because, you know, that might be a little awkward.

    Hope everyone's well.

    Best, etc.,
    Alex
Hey dude, can I get one of those cards?

I can assure you we hate ourselves infinitely more than the two seconds you stop to even consider our existence. Here's the email I sent Shott a couple of weeks ago.
well, you know, i'm still uncomfortable with the idea of speaking for a large swath of bloggers - or even anyone other than myself. we're talking about a very small circle here, it doesn't really count. plus, there are times i go months without stepping into a bar so i'm not much of an authority.

too much at any single spot can be seen as a lack of imagination or worse, social heresy for not embracing the many options our city affords us. doesn't make a difference to me. i find a place i like, i stick with it until it becomes unbearable. i practically lived in luna lounge from '96-'98 but eventually stopped when it got too crowded. it was a great run, except for getting banned after a drunken yelling match with a female bartender. (wasn't really my fault, i swear. she baited me and i was told later by someone who worked there that she had several issues in the customer relations dept.)

in a nutshell (in a bowl inside the magician), i'm incredibly lazy and not particularly interested in the bar/restaurant/club scene. if i had my choice, people would just come to my apartment to drink. the magician is a block away from where i live and i'm a creature with a pretty small comfort zone.
