The Sketch: Highest levels ever of education, statistics and spin

Published: 27 April 2007

Things are going well in education. Or at least in the Department for Education. There is the highest level ever. That's very encouraging. We should join with the Government in celebrating it. My notes don't record what the highest level is of but, whatever it was they were talking about, it must be easy enough to guess.

Terence Blacker: Why I'm not sold on 'The Apprentice'

Published: 27 April 2007

It celebrates the attitudes which, away from the office, are deplored as yobbish

Miles Kington: Seeking an answer to life's problems? Here, take two

Published: 27 April 2007

Among the things that have been declared dead in the past 30 years are: the theatre, the movie, jazz, opera and poetry. They're all doing fine

Dominic Lawson: A simple truth: prison works, and it is neither cruel nor vengeful to say so

Published: 27 April 2007

The philosophy of so-called 'liberals' has become detached from ideas of right and wrong

Peter Blake: My Life In Tracey Emin's Column

Published: 27 April 2007

'Writing this gives me the chance to explain, once and for all, that I didn't steal Tracey's mobile phone'

Joan Bakewell: Prince Harry can't really do his duty in Iraq

Published: 27 April 2007

This young man of 22, vigorous and enthusiastic, is faced with the frustration of all his hopes

Johann Hari: The real scandal at the World Bank

Published: 26 April 2007

The Bank is killing thousands of the poorest people in the world

The Sketch: Cameron mutates into a man of substance

Published: 26 April 2007

I feel an apology of some sort is in order. Equally, I wouldn't want you to think I'd got anything wrong. There's no repentance involved, or remorse to prevent it happening again. But nonetheless, my description of David Cameron's earliest statements as "lacking the structure of drivel" does seem now to require an apology.

Adrian Hamilton: When wearing the veil is a progressive act

Published: 26 April 2007

Over the past four, years, Erdogan's Islamist party has revolutionised Turkey's economy

Miles Kington: Suffering from peer pressure? Your questions answered

Published: 26 April 2007

'Sir, I am Lord Tresco, and I have been approached by a retail giant which wishes me to remove the second letter from my name ...'

The Sketch: The ambition of Dr Demento betrayed by a blush

Published: 25 April 2007

Will Dr Demento - or to give him his full title - the Rt Hon Dr Demento of the Revolutionary Ministry of the Interior - run against Gordon Brown for prime minister?

Terence Blacker: You're on my roll of honour, Sheryl

Published: 25 April 2007

It would seem a fairly obvious rule of public life that references to daily, intimate activities be kept to a minimum. If a book called Tales from the Smallest Room were published, it would do little for the reputations of those included. Evelyn Waugh died there, Joe Orton spent a lot of time there, Rula Lenska once got stuck in there and George Michael was arrested there: it is all one needs to know. When the former star Jade Goody announced to the world's press her preference for quilted toilet paper, her days as a celebrity were numbered.

Alex James: The Great Escape

Published: 25 April 2007

I've felt better about everything since I bought the microphones. It's the same feeling as having a good stock in the fridge, or a trusted builder working on the house. Life is sure to improve now I have the right microphones. On Saturday I told Bill I'd bought a pair of '87s. Bill's usually thinking about Bach and his music is sometimes on Radio 3. He's rarely stirred, but at the mention of the word "Neumann" he became very enthusiastic. "I tell you, man, they're the best." He waved his wine around and clonked his mandolin player on the nose.

Miles Kington: The Merrie Tragedie of King Tony

Published: 25 April 2007

Were Shakespeare alive, would he not fall with cries of delight on the Merrie Tragedie of King Tony - a tale full of sound, fury and spin physicians? In the Bard's absence, Master Miles Kington dips his mischievous quill...

Miles Kington: If I don't know what it stands for, I won't stand for it

Published: 25 April 2007

I've had to learn what a CD and DVD is, but also to forget what an LP and an EP were. If they don't sell them any more, what's the point?

The Sketch: Work and Pensions report? Must be a Freudian slip

Published: 24 April 2007

There was a Freud report on pensions, which you may have missed. My notes of Jim Murphy's observation on the report go: "It puts a strong emphasis on how like a penis it is." I can't remember exactly what that refers to or whether it is a completely accurate representation of what the minister said.

Philip Hensher: The ultimate holiday romance

Published: 24 April 2007

The wonderful tale of Amy Robson is increasingly rare, and to be enjoyed as a curiosity

Dominic Lawson: Why should Labour elect its new leader?

Published: 24 April 2007

When the British people voted in 2005, they did so knowing that Blair would go before the next election

Mary Dejevsky: The vindication of French democracy

Published: 24 April 2007

They took a long time to make up their minds, but they valued their vote

Miles Kington: What is lightning fast and often just a series of squiggles?

Published: 24 April 2007

You have practised writing your name in such a slapdash fashion that now you have evolved a signature which is entirely special to you. Well done!

Bruce Anderson: Mr Cameron had a bad week, and now he turns to face a reinvigorated Chancellor

Published: 23 April 2007

Tories who are disturbed by the courting of Greg Dyke should remember there are precedents

Johann Hari: Where are our gay sporting heroes hiding?

Published: 23 April 2007

Miles Kington: Spare a thought for yesterday's souvenir-makers

Published: 23 April 2007

Still in warehouse, at very reasonable prices, are a variety of T-shirts showing crossed tennis rackets and the legend 'Tim Henman: Wimbledon Champion!'

Dom Joly: As a gay Goth, I am very fashionable

Published: 22 April 2007

It appears that, by one of those weird "it had to happen in the end" happenstances, I am currently fashionable. Before you scoff, I don't mean that the weird media entity that is "Dom Joly" is fashionable - far from it. I'm currently serving time on an ITV2 reality show that Jonathan Ross personally rang to inform me was a "fucking joke". He's right, of course, but I'm not here to discuss that at the moment.
