The showdown will take place at an EGM on 31 May, with the activists already claiming support from more than 47 per cent of shareholders.

Jeremy Warner's Outlook: Browne's downfall is like a Greek tragedy. His end is sealed finally by a jilted lover

Published: 02 May 2007

It is hard to imagine a more tragic or ignominious end to a once glittering business career than the one suffered yesterday by Lord Browne of Madingley, the now former chief executive of BP. After two years of mishaps and disasters, Lord Browne's hard-earned position as Britain's most admired business leader already lay in tatters. Yet it is his private life which has finally brought him down, exposed as so often occurs in that most heartless and brutal of ways by a kiss-and-tell story by a former lover.

Published: 29 April 2007

The tortoise is catching up with the hare. The continental European economy as a whole is growing strongly at last, with Germany in particular experiencing its fastest growth since 2000. Yet Spain, until recently the fastest-growing of the large European economies, is now falling back, and its property market is in serious trouble. What's up?

Jeremy Warner's Outlook: Here's one way through the ABN conundrum for Sir Fred, but it is hardly an easy one

Published: 26 April 2007

It's never over until it is over, so back comes Sir Fred Goodwin, chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland Group, with an apparently higher, and generally more attractive offer for ABN Amro than that already tabled by Barclays and agreed by the ABN board. This rather puts Arthur Martinez, the ABN Amro chairman, on the spot, or at least it would do if he could have any confidence in Sir Fred's €39 a share cash and shares offer being a real bid.

Market Report: Deutsche Telekom eyes a spruced up C&W

Published: 26 April 2007

It has been a while since rumours of a bid for Cable & Wireless did the rounds. This time last year they were almost daily, but if the gossip is true that Deutsche Telekom is mulling a bid for C&W it will have to pay substantially more than it would have done a year ago.
