Racing: Light makes Cecil look mighty fine for the Oaks

Published: 10 May 2007

This meeting is one of the quintessential pageants of the British Turf, and as such nobody was going to grumble unduly about the deluges that left the crowd huddling stoically under soggy parasols. Into each life some rain must fall, after all, and far too much had been falling into that of the absent friend who was the toast of the first day.

Truckle, for instance, which today gets its annual outing; a giant cheesy one is offered as part of the first prize for this afternoon's Chester Cup, along with £74,784. And 50lb of crumbly Cheshire takes some shifting, and some eating, as Michael Jarvis will attest.

Racing: Rebel victory threatens rich tradition

Published: 07 May 2007

For now, at any rate, Cockney Rebel and his gaudy supporting band warrant the benefit of the doubt. Many, it must be said, could not stifle a certain disquiet after his stunning success in the first Classic of the season at Newmarket on Saturday. Last season, after all, this colt had barely managed a cameo role while Teofilo and Holy Roman Emperor swept the Oscars. In the exasperating absence of those two - one by accident, the other by design - something pretty special was required to redeem the Stan James 2,000 Guineas.

Racing: Finsceal's day where Teofilo failed to tread

Published: 06 May 2007
