Many workers at the Nott Street plant, the Schenectady plant and the Main plant worked without protective clothing and are now suffering from various illnesses, including cancer according to a May, 2006 Reuters article.

GE has used the plants to manufacture a variety of products including electric motors and generators, gas turbines, wire and cable, insulating materials, and microwave tubes. Unfortunately, high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been found in various areas of the manufacturing plants and in the former on-site landfills. Many of the workers exposed to PCBs were making chemicals for Monsanto Co.
Side effects of PCB exposure include health problems related to a person's immune system, reproductive system, nervous system, endocrine system and other health effects.
