When a brachial plexus palsy injury occurs from medical malpractice, we can help.
Brachial plexus palsy results when the system of nerves in the shoulder, hand, and arm sustain injury such as tearing and/or stretching—most frequently during birth and the delivery process.
These injuries can be categorized into four distinct types:
Avulsion--when the nerve is torn from the spine;
Neuroma--a
damaged nerve that has tried to heal but is hindered by scar tissue formation;
Neuropraxia--(also known as stretch) the most common type of brachial
plexus injury and occurs when the nerve is injured but not torn, and
Rupture--a tearing of the nerve.
All four of these types may be caused by medical malpractice and/or negligence. Treatment of brachial plexus palsy injuries varies according to their severity but may include surgery, occupational therapy, and/or physical therapy.
If your child has a brachial plexus palsy injury that may be a result of medical malpractice, you may seek counsel with a lawyer to learn more about the legal options available to you.
