Pagdi-Ancient Indian Boardgame

Overview

Chowka-bara, Pagde, Pagdi is an ancient Indian board game.

It is played by 2 to 4 players on a board with a grid of 5x5 squares. There is also another version ('ashte-kashte') with a grid of 7x7 squares.

Like many such games there are regional variations. It is played by young and old, rich and poor in villages and towns. It is a poor cousin of another famous board game which orginated in India. Unlike Chess, which is a pure game of skill, in pagdi, the players throw dice whose outcome influences the game. Still strategy is important and can offset unfavorable outcome of dice. Quite often 'cowries' (a special variety of sea shells) substitute for dice.
You can setup a game almost at no cost. Just draw the grid on a slate or floor with chalk.(It is not uncommon to see people play on mud-plasterd floors.)
Berry seeds for pawns and four cowries to toss. You are ready ...!

How to play

Two to Four players play the game. Each player places his pawns in his home square (South,East,North,West). The player throws cowries (dice). The outcome could be 1,2,3,4 or 8. The player advances one of his pawns in his route. If the destination square is not a home square and has an opponent's pawn on it, it is captured and returned to opponent's home square. Pawns can not be captured when they are in a home square or final square. When all the pawns of a player reach final square he wins. The last remaining player is the final loser. When a player throws 4 or 8 or captures a pawn he will throw again, otherwise next player ( in the clockwise order) plays.
This basic description does not reveal the game's true potential. Read the detailed rules. It is a fascinating game of chance and skill.

Rules

PAGADI PAGADE CHOWKA-BARA

Pagdi is a game for 2 to 4 players. It is a game of chance which also requires certain planning and strategies like chess.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the game is to send all your pawns to the centre square(Final Square(FH)).

LAYOUT

A square board of 5x5 grid (25 squares). There are 4 home squares where initially 4 pawns of a player are placed. These squares are also the safe squares where you cannot capture opponent's pawn. At the centre is the FH.

RULES

1) Initially players' positions are chosen by lots.

2) OCCUPANCY RULE: Only one pawn can occupy one square in the outer rim, except 4 home squares where any numbers of pawns can occupy. In the case of inner squares, more one than pawn can occupy it.

3) The players get chance to throw dice (cast) one at a time. The dice will throw 1, 2, 3, 4 or 8. If you cast 4 or 8, you have another chance to throw.

4) The player who has cast, decides which of his pawns he wants to move and the pawn will advance along his route by the cast value. If the destination is not a home square and it has an opponent's pawn he HAS to CAPTURE it and send it home. (If the opponent's pawn are 'paired' they can not be 'broken' by this rule. See advanced play)

5) If you capture an opponent's pawn, you get another chance to throw the dice.

6) INNER SQUARE ACCESS RULE: Unless you have captured atleast one of opponent's pawn, you can not enter inner squares. If all of your pawns come home as result of capture, your access to inner squares is lost. You have to capture a piece once again.

7) If no legal move is possible for any of your pawn, your play passes to the next player.

8) You cannot capture a pawn when they are on safe squares (which are: the 4 home squares and the centeral square). The number of pawns on a safe square can be as many as possible, and also of any number of players.

9) FINAL SQUARE RULE. You have to reach Final Home Square by an exact throw. Suppose you are near to FHS,say 24,and you cast 2, you cannot enter FHS since you need exact number (ie 1) to enter FHS.

9) A player wins when all his/her pawn reach Final Square. He leaves the game and others continue. The last player is final loser.

ADVANCED PLAY: Pairing and blocking

When you have two of your pawn are in an inner square (except FHS), and you have thrown your dice, if you get 2, you have the option of pairing two pawns. Once paired, the pair move together. YOU HAVE TO THROW 2,4,8 to make pair move 1 2 4 squares. The pair is known as 'jugga'. The pair acts as a block for movement of your opponents pawn. They can not cross it. If a pawn has to cross the square occupied by a pair, the pawn has to reach that square and sit till next round. When you get your chance next time, depending on the throw you can move out of 'jugga'. However if the owner of 'jugga' moves, all the pawns occuping 'jugga' square are sent home. This rule applies to a 'jugga' too. i.e if a player's 'jugga' occupies another's 'jugga', if the other "jugga" moves , all the pawns paired or otherwise occupying the 'jugga' square go to their respective home.
