    Creating social impact through innovation

    HDIF is a challenge fund for innovation to create social impact in education, health and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) across Tanzania.

    HDIF will provide two rounds of funding in 2014 and 2015 with opportunities for both pilot projects and to scale up test innovations. Technical assistance and support will also be provided to the innovation eco-system and grantees.

    HDIF works in close partnership with the Commission for Science in Technology (COSTECH) to strengthen the innovation ecosystem in Tanzania. We also work closely with other groups, organisations, individuals, and members of the private sector working in and promoting innovation.

What we do

The Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) is a £30 million competitive challenge fund which provides grants to organisations driving innovative approaches which aim to improve the quality, value-for-money, and sustainability of basic services in education, health and water, sanitation and hygiene.

We stimulate and foster a thriving innovation ecosystem in Tanzania, which includes technical assistance to grantee and capacity building of the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH).

We challenge the notion of ‘business as usual’ and encourage organisations to take a risk and do something different. Innovation has the potential to be the catalyst to change in Tanzania. There is a need to increase the quality of services and the quality of outcomes in order for Tanzania to reduce poverty and further its development.
