'In general, what I love about Bulgarian literature is that Bulgarians are just storytellers; they have always been very interested in how many different ways you can tell the classic human stories.’
Watch the full interview here:
‘Poetry is one of the most central pillars of Bulgarian literature, and so the sound of the language is always very important - even in the prose, even in novels. I feel like there’s always a conversation going on with Bulgaria’s poetry and with its poetic tradition.'
‘I find Bulgarian writing and novels so interesting because they really don’t follow any kind of mould. People are willing to take chances more than a long-established literature that has a very heavy canon that puts you in certain genre expectations.'
‘It’s a relatively young literature. I think the first Bulgarian novel was published at the end of the 19th century. So I think that Bulgarian writers are a little like kids; they’re excited, enthusiastic and willing to take chances on structure, on types of stories.'
Now that Time Shelter has become the first Bulgarian novel to win the International Booker Prize, and as today is Bulgaria's Cyrillic Alphabet Day, you might want to know more about Bulgarian literature. We asked the book's translator Angela Rodel to sum it up.
