Abstract

Recent discussions of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) have raised concerns about its potential to produce unpredictable and persistent personal transformations that patients cannot fully anticipate and may subsequently regret. These concerns pose challenges for informed consent and have contributed to arguments for psychedelic ethical exceptionalism. In this conceptual commentary, we propose a process-based, agency-sensitive account of personal transformation. Rather than treating psychedelic transformation as a ‘single’ event imposed upon a ‘passive’ subject, we distinguish between a potentially rapid transformative trigger, the subsequent process throughout which psychedelic experiences are interpreted and integrated, and its longitudinal outcomes. Patients' agency may vary across these phases, being particularly compromised during acute psychedelic experiences while playing a greater role during preparation, integration, and longer-term reflection. This account does not eliminate the informed-consent challenges associated with PAP, including the possibility of persistent and regretted personal change, but suggests that they do not by themselves require a fundamentally exceptional framework for informed consent. We argue instead for enhanced disclosure of transformative uncertainty, attention to patients' susceptibility during acute and interpretative phases, and follow-up practices that support patients' agency in responding to persistent personal changes.

Abstract

This study examines the chronological horizon of jewellery featuring star-shaped pendants used between the 7th and 9th centuries AD. The typological uniformity of the early variants with plain loops, along with their distribution within Pannonia in the Carpathian Basin, can be effectively understood within the framework of late antique and Byzantine communication networks. The variants datable from the second half of the 7th century to the first half (?) of the 9th century connect the Lower Danube region with the territory of the Bohemian- and Morava-Basin via the eastern half of the Carpathian Basin; notably, they are absent west of the Danube as well as in the Western Balkans. Finally, the latest variants, which also emerge within a Carolingian peripheral cultural milieu (first half of the 9th century), can once again be interpreted within a Pannonian and Western Balkan network of relations, whereas the variants with wide lunulae cease to exist parallel to this late phase. Based on its characteristic way of being worn and its spatial distribution, this jewellery type can be identified as a marker of identity for certain groups. Depending on the geographical extent of this artefact type, these groups played a heightened role in the communication network extending from the Bohemian Basin to the Lower Danube region. Together with the associated mode of dress, it may be suggested that these objects signal culturally distinct communities within the Avar environment that actively maintained interregional interactions. Meanwhile, this network of relations cannot be separated from the late period of the Avar Khaganate's existence (approx. the ‘long 8th century’). Consequently, traces of a network of relations can be identified that is characteristically Avar-period yet carries unique features from the perspective of Avar culture, and which temporarily became a defining route of communication between the Eastern Balkans and the Moravian and Bohemian Basins.

Abstract

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) may be approaching its own “Dodo Bird” moment: the appearance that multiple psychotherapeutic modalities “work” equally well, not because they are interchangeable, but because both symptom-focused outcome measures and, more fundamentally, the assumptions embedded in dominant RCT paradigms are ill-suited for probing the dynamic, relational, and meaning-making processes that drive therapeutic change in PAT. We argue that case-based, process-oriented, and observational approaches are better suited to capturing these dynamic processes, and that to discern differences across modalities it is necessary to use measures attuned to normative foundations of each respective framework. However, even when such processes are more adequately examined, PAT is unlikely to converge on a single optimal modality; rather, different therapeutic modalities are likely to be optimally effective for different individuals within specific contexts. Recognizing this pluralism reframes the central scientific task—not as identifying one superior intervention, but as understanding for whom, under what conditions, and through which relational and meaning-making processes diverse PAT modalities facilitate transformation. As psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) research continues to prioritize treatment standardization and mechanistic isolation—assumptions suited to pharmacological interventions but misaligned with therapies that derive their effects through context, relationship, and subjective meaning—the field risks repeating epistemological errors that decades of psychotherapy research have already revealed. To avoid this fate, we must revisit what counts as evidence and how it is generated.

Pszichotikus állapotok és a spirituális válság hipotézise: Differenciáldiagnosztikai kihívások és kezelési javaslatok

Psychotic states and the spiritual emergency hypothesis: Differential diagnostic challenges and treatment recommendations

A tanulmány célja a spirituális válság hipotézisének kritikus vizsgálata, különös hangsúllyal a magyar szakirodalomban megjelent kutatásokon, és a diagnosztikai különbségtételi szempontokon. A tanulmány következtetése, hogy egyelőre nincs elég tudományos bizonyíték ahhoz, hogy a spirituális válságot önálló diagnózisként kezeljük. Nincsenek pontos kritériumok, nincs megbízható mérőeszköz, és a pillanatnyi, keresztmetszeti tüneti kép nem elegendő a pontos elkülönítéshez. A megkülönböztetésben segíthet a lefolyás, a kulturális kontextus, a precipitáló tényezők ismerete, a belátás mértéke és a hosszú távú kimenetel, azonban ezek prediktív értéke jelentősen korlátozott. Gyakorlatias, lépésről lépésre épülő klinikai megközelítésre van szükség, amely ötvözi a pszichiátriai tudást a kulturális érzékenységgel és egészséges kétkedéssel, miközben a beteg biztonságát tartja szem előtt. A kultúrák közti terápiás kompetencia fejlesztése kulcsfontosságú ebben a tekintetben.

Abstract

The aim of this position paper is to explore and discuss the intersection of music therapy and psychedelic-assisted therapy, focusing on the safe and effective use of music during psilocybin treatment. Key points include a historical overview of psychedelic therapy, an examination of current research on the use of music in psychedelic therapy, and a rationale for why an advanced-trained music therapist is best suited for providing receptive music experiences during psychedelic therapy. The goals are to bring awareness of the importance of music selection to the therapeutic process and to frame a recommendation of utilizing music therapists as the experts in facilitating music experiences while working in psychedelic therapy settings, ensuring safe, ethical, and supportive musical experiences for participants.

Slipper pine

Abstract

The decorative seals of Turkish pipes are useful for identifying workshops and their products, tracing cultural influences, and with their help, relative chronological conclusions can be drawn. The stamp now analyzed was known in a significant area in the 17th century and was published in sufficient numbers. I found a total of 72 pipes—including unpublished museum specimens—that wear the ‘slipper pine’ stamp. Of these, the largest number of examples are those with oval bowls. A fairly uniform group can be distinguished within this type, on which the slipper pine stamp was always applied to the pipes according to the same layout rules. This can be considered the basic type of the slipper pine carrier and distributor. Its distribution extends from Podolia to Anatolia. Several examples of the keel type also bear this stamp, but there is no uniformity. The other pipes bearing the seal can be classified into a wide variety of types, the majority of which are known from the Hódoltság, the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary occupied by the Ottoman Empire. These further developed the shape of the stamp, as well as its use and location on the surface of the pipe, although they also follow the layout rules of the basic oval-bowled type in a certain way. Based on several sources, the seal originated before the 1660s, around 1650 at the latest, and remained in use until the 1700s. The original place of production of the basic type was probably Adrianople/Edirne and its surroundings, while the other workshops operated later, based on workshop stamps.

Absztrakt

A Kárpát-medence 9–10. századi magyar honfoglalás kori régészeti hagyatékának kelet-európai előzményeit a Szubbotci-típusú hagyatékhoz köti napjainkban a régészeti kutatás, melynek megismerése az elmúlt 10–15 évben jelentős fejlődésen ment keresztül. Mivel időzközben a morva díszgombok kutatásában is fontos új eredmények születtek, illetve felmerült a szubbotci aranyleletek növényi díszítése nyomán azoknak a nagyszentmiklósi kincs köréhez való kapcsolás ötlete is, elengedhetetlenné vált egy új elemzés készítése. Dolgozatunkban a morva díszgombok legújabb kutatási eredményei alapján, cseh és szlovák régész szakértők új klasszifikációja szerint tárgyaljuk és értékeljük a címben említett leleteket. Végül pedig a történeti források áttekintésével igyekszünk meghatározni a tárgyak eredetének szűkebb régióját is az egykori Morva Fejedelemség déli részén, a mai Mikulčice környéki régióban.

Abstract

Background and aims

As contributions to this special issue attest, psychedelic integration is currently garnering much scholarly attention. However, given that most agree the focus on integration is recent, this paper asks why integration is being given such an emphasis now. What has changed in Western cultures of psychedelicisms, once preoccupied with just ‘set and setting’, that necessitates such concern with what comes after the dose?

Methods

A discourse analysis of recent definitions of the term ‘integration’ was undertaken, and the results read through the lens of ‘margalogy’. Margalogy examines the ways, cross-culturally, that techniques of some desired transformation are canalised, formalised, and institutionalised into a ‘path’.

Results

Discourse analysis reveals two anxieties implicit within ‘integration’, both driven, in the so-called psychedelic renaissance, by the medicalisation of psychedelics. The first and ostensible anxiety concerns the need for psychic integration, but the second, implicit anxiety is concerned with integrating clients back into society without the upset that characterised the 1960s: societal integration.

Conclusions

The tripartite schema of preparation, dose, integration found in psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) is usefully read as a path, one necessitated by medicalisation. PAT as path is scaffolded with intentional elements, which include preparation and the much-emphasised integration, that are put in place to mitigate the risks of the non-intentional elements that arise from the capricious nature of psychedelics themselves. Examples drawn from psychedelicisms that predate the so-called renaissance suggest that faith in the ability of the integrative path to bring that caprice to heel may not be justified.
