Season 2 is fantastic!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 March 2008Honestly, the only reason I started watching Torchwood is because I think John Barrowman is hot lol. I heard that the show was bad but entertaining at the same time and I decided to just watch it and judge for myself. I honestly enjoyed the first season, even though there were a lot of hits and misses. There is only one episode I disliked and it was ep9 which pretty much focused on a character that wasn't part of the Torchwood team. But the rest of the episodes had a lot more highs than lows IMO. So I guess the best word to describe the first season is "entertaining". This word was used by a lot of people who don't like the show and criticize it too.
Now, the second season has been FANTASTIC. I've seen the first 11 episodes and I love them. There are only 2 episodes that I'm not crazy about, but they're still better than most of the eps in season 1.
This new season, the characters have developed and became much more fun. The whole atmosphere of the show has improved and the story lines are much better imo. It's definitely worth watching.

No shame...just humanity. (And the rest)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 March 2008Torchwood's great: it's a good mix of semi serious 'dark' (their word!) sci fi and fluffy fun with a generous dose of sheer humanity. ('tho those who bring this out aren't always human!) The much maligned (and celebrated) snogging between same/opposite sexes and aliens is a part and parcel of the whole series aim to present the bizarre within a very normal (Welsh) world. The snogging, the cameraderie, the Cardiff backdrop are the normal bit and I strongly recommend you allow your kids to watch it because guys do snog guys and gals gals and the sooner they accept this, the sooner the world will become a more pleasant place to live in. Torchwood Series 2 has been pre-watershed-ed to make it more watchable by kids and they've taken out some of the violence. I'm pre-ordering despite being only part way thru the series on TV because I applaud Russell T Davies and his team for making ground-breaking, mould-breaking TV within the genre least likely. Oh, and let's face it, JB IS eye candy!

Rock on, Captain Jack!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 June 2009I really enjoyed series two, having been prepared to be disappointed as very often the second series of anything is a let-down after the first. Having read some of the other reviews, I was surprised by the number of people who seem to concentrate only on the personal relationships: to me, these are secondary to the storyline and serve only to prove that no-one is perfect. I love the views of Cardiff, and the Wlesh accent. The contrast between these and the outrageous nature of some of the plots is great, and there are some wonderful moments of humour. To me, this is modern sci-fi at its best.

Better than ever...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 March 2008I have to say it is disappointing that some people are still criticising Torchwood for the gay scenes - dear me I think it is time to join the rest of us in the 21st Century where (gasp) there are same sex relationships.
Still: to the res. This is a massive improvement on the occasionally uneven first season, the writing is sharper and wittier and because they are easing up on the SFX it is not over-reliant of CG (which occasionally marred the last season). Even better then that there are some real laughs in this series.
The 'special guests' have also fit in well - like it's sister show Doctor Who - they are not simply wheeled in for the sake of it. Alan Dale is nicely sinister (how far he has come from Ramsey Street) and James Marsters looks to be having enormous fun as Captain John.
So ignore the naysayers and enjoy!

brilliant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 October 2009I never watched the first series of torchwood but i had always wanted too, so when series 2 came on tele, i made it a ritual to watch every episode. it was brilliant! the story lines in every episode are great and the special effects etc are very good. the realationships between the characters are sometimes tense but thats what makes them so good. it feels like you know them and they aren't just fictional characters in a sci fi series.
i had to wait so long until i could buy the DVD boxset and im so glad i did. all the episodes are on it as well as special features (outakes and deleted scenes) and the torchwood declassifyed series. completely brillaint, any fan of torchwood or doctor who must buy this!

Torchwood at its best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2014This was such a good series! I'd seen it before, and finally thought that it was time for me to buy it for myself. There was just the right amount of happy and sad to make the series one of the best. The finale was perfect - I enjoyed like I'd never seen it before. Would highly recommend! Surprising re-watch value, and I will keep it and still be watching it like the first time round in years to come.

Getting Better
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2008I loved Series 1 but series 2 (so far) has blown s1 out the water! The fact I'm pre-ordering this even though the series aint finished tells you really what I think of it. There have been a couple of....dull episodes good but not brilliant and then there has been some fantastic ones. Some really good writing. I hope the extra's on this DVD boxset are better than on the previous one.

Victoria5 out of 5 starsCompelling and Fun
Reviewed in Japan on 19 January 2010Following solidly in the steps of the first season, Torchwood (2nd Season) is even bigger and better, with character development where you'd least expect. Characters such as Ianto Jones really come into their own in this season with strong lines and beautiful acting. The plot twists are intense, and sad moments really affected me! I'm not normally a series or drama fan, but this show had me riveted from beginning to end.
Many looks into Jack's back story, as well as more Doctor Who tie-in moments, make this season a must-see.
I wish there were three more seasons! :D

Cats5 out of 5 starsTorchwood - YEAH!
Reviewed in Germany on 16 August 2008What makes "Torchwood" special is its adult, open-minded, and often dark approach to certain storylines and themes--in contrast to Dr. Who, which is also a good series, but more family-oriented and thus often not as satisfying--as well as its entertaining mixture of fantasy, science fiction and crime.
This season is even better and more exciting than the first one: unpredictable, full of adventure, suspense, fun, and sexual tension/innuendos. The characters are now more established and fleshed out, and even though Gwen has maybe still a bit too much screen time for my taste, it's very enjoyable to see the team work to save Cardiff and the world. This season ends in a finale that will blow you away, because it comes totally unexpected--and it will leave you wanting more. More of "Torchwood" and its characters!
Charismatic lead actor John Barrowman, who sometimes seems disappointingly underused as a supporting actor in Dr. Who--especially in the fourth season's finale--does an extraordinary job in his portrayal of Captain Jack Harkness. The range of emotions he displays is amazing; he really brings the character to life and is a pure joy to watch. It's also enjoyable to see the relationship between him and Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd), who has a lot of funny and fabulous lines and definitely more screen time this season, develop some more. Hopefully we'll get to see more of that and a strengthening of their relationship in the third one as well.
If Martha and Mickey (from Dr. Who) really end up joining "Torchwood," I surely hope Russell T. Davies won't change "Torchwood's" own tone and style but keep this a series for adult viewers who've come to love the characters and the modern feel of this series. There is "Dr. Who" and there is "Torchwood," and I'd like them to remain separated to a certain extent.
Seeing snogging and love between same-sex characters is definitely part of what makes this series so special and unique since it's the first time ever that we get an action-oriented SF/F TV show which also concentrates on character development and doesn't shy away from portraying love in any form.
The DVD set looks beautiful and elegant. In my opinion, red and black (1st season) are perfect colors for "Torchwood," so I hope they'll stick with that for the next season and return to a black set.
Along with the episodes you get some nice extras, such as deleted scenes, outtakes, a documentary on Captain Jack and "Torchwood Declassified". I'd have appreciated audio commentaries by the cast and crew, too, but maybe we'll get them along with other extras when season two comes out in HD.
Anyway, for this price the set is a steal, so don't miss out on this wonderful series. It's definitely worth buying! To quote John Barrowman, "Torchwood, YEAH!"
