Editorial Reviews
Review
" . . . a uniformly strong introduction to the world of Reid and Campbell and beyond them to the circumstances and ideas of those crucial figures of the Scottish Enlightenment-Adam Ferguson, Hume, Francis Hutcheson, and Adam Smith. The volume is an example of the ways in which ideas and arguments and ideology and rhetoric can be introduced and explored clearly and without compromise." Studies in English Literature 1500-1900
"This volume maintains the high standard of excellence set by previous offerings in the Cambridge Companion series, making it a valuable reference for anyone interested in western philosophy and intellectual history." Theology Today

The best introduction to the Scottish Enlightenment
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2018I have found this 2003 Cambridge Companion to be the best introduction to the highly influential Scottish Enlightenment of primarily the 18th century. Like all the Companions I have read, a leading expert in the field, Alexander Broadie, serves as editor and an author and the remaining fifteen co-authors are equally distinguished. The format is that each author writes on a particular aspect of the SE, attaching extremely valuable notes and references to important sources to their essay. While much has been written on this topic since 2003, I still hold that this volume is the best way to gain an introduction to this topic. And given the influence of the SE on the American revolution, we should all be interested in its contents.
Among the topics covered are religion and rationale theology; anthropology; science; scepticism and common sense; moral sense; political theory; economics; jurisprudence; historiography; and an important essay on the impact of the SE on America's founding. These are serious essays, so the reader has to bear down because the analysis can be challenging. The final essay focuses upon the nineteenth century afterlife of this creative period. Among the folks getting attention are David Hume and Adam Smith (both a lot), Dugald Stewart, Francis Hutcheson, John Millar, Thomas Reid, and Adam Ferguson. Interestingly enough, Montesquieu played an important role and his thought on balanced government and how republics could govern large territories passed through the SE to American thinkers like Madison and Jefferson.
I found the essays on legal theory, sociality and socialization, and historiography particularly valuable and interesting--but there is not a bad essay in the entire collection. Particularly emerging as a giant figure is, as might be expected, David Hume who pops up in a number of the essays. What a bright man who unfortunately because of his scepticism about religion was banned from teaching in any university in Scotland. Both a select bibliography and a good index are included, as well as a very incisive introductory essay by Broadie which really sets the stage for the volume. Such a fertile intellectual period which we still benefit from today.

Superb Summary
Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2024Compare Scotland then to Scotland now. This book presents a great summary of te major minds of Enlightenment Scotland, Locke, Hume, et al. This second edition adds to the first and examines a multiple set of dimensions of the Enlightenment thought. One wonders how this has waned and what has become of Scotland. Reading this books demonstrates many of the ideas that influenced the Founders in the US. It also gives us an understanding on how fragile this may be.
